How Right Is McCain?
WSJ ^ | 19 Feb 2008 | Pete Dupont

Posted on 02/18/2008 8:22:52 PM PST by oblomov

John McCain will be the Republican Party's presidential candidate in November. Most Republicans certainly know who John McCain is, but there still seems to be a question as to just what he is. President Bush said last week that there was "no doubt in my mind he is a true conservative." But is he a Ronald Reagan conservative, or more like a Bob Dole moderate? Or is he like Dwight Eisenhower, who claimed in the 1952 nomination battle that he was "just as conservative" as his opponent, Sen. Robert Taft?

Mr. McCain's lifetime American Conservative Union rating is 82, compared with conservative Sen. Sam Brownback's 94, Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's 90, and liberal Sen. Olympia Snowe's 50. So he is much more conservative than liberal; indeed Americans for Tax Reform rates him at 83, compared with Hillary Clinton's 7 and Barack Obama's 8.

We know he has a tough streak, saying that when he looked into Russian president Vladimir Putin's eyes he "saw three letters: a K, a G and a B," and we know he has a temper. When Mitt Romney said to McCain in one of their debates, "Don't turn the pharmaceutical companies into the big bad guys," Mr. McCain replied, "Well, they are." In the words of Sen. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Mr. McCain "is erratic. He is hotheaded. He loses his temper and he worries me."

DuPont concludes that McCain is conservative in the sense that Teddy Roosevelt was conservative. This, in my view, is better than a Wilsonian liberal. But I'm disheartened by having yet another Hamiltonian, "big government" conservative lead the GOP. The party has lost its way.

I’m still voting for Romney in the Texas Primary on March 4.

Senator McCain’s most recent ACU score is “65” for 2006.

This is how he is trending. Even if he votes conservative, he lambastes the conservative position as “cruel” or “extreme”.

Crazy.

Considering he is most often WRONG, he’s not very right.

We know how “conservative” he is by what he says and does.

We don’t need someone to take a view against a long-dead president and tell us he is “something.”

Tiresome repetitions. Lifetime ACU rating of 82, but last year’s rating was 65. In other words, he is getting worse as he ages.

Sure, it’s a better ACU rating than Olympia Snowe, but appearancs are deceptive. She comes from a very liberal state and has to vote liberal most of the time or get thrown out by her constituents. He doesn’t. She is actually a good RINO, i.e., she votes liberal whenever she can, but she votes conservative when the leadership tells her to, i.e., when her vote is crucially needed to pass an important bill.

McCain thumbs his nose at the leadership on important votes. He helped Lincoln Chaffee defeat ANWR drilling by one vote, for instance. He voted against Bush’s tax cuts. He blocked progress on judicial appointments. He is NOT a team player, except with his friends on the other side of the aisle, such as Feingold or Kennedy.

Yes, the party has lost its way and going along with them for another election cycle isn’t going to help them find the ‘right’ path.

McCain is perhaps more fiscally conservative than all the Republicans who've been in power this decade. He was the lone voice crying in the wilderness while Bush and Co. were filling the pork barrel. McCain absolutely hates excessive spending.

However, he is liberal in other ways, as so many of you know..... I don't have to remind anyone of the amnesty bill, No Child Left Behind, and McCain-Feingold (which IMO wasn't such a bad bill before the rest of Congress got through with adding amendments to it).

But the dude will prevent Democrats from spending excess money. That much is not in doubt. He would have, and will, keep Republicans from spending excess money. That much is not in doubt. I can't think of a U.S. Senator or Congressman who is more for small spending than he is.

It helps that he's a national security hawk. I just wish he could reconcile that position with our southern border. Evidently, few if any in Washington can.

God bless his family for their tradition of service. His grandfather and father were both naval officers. You all know about his service. One of his sons serves in the Marine Corps and just got back from his tour in Iraq last week. The other son is in the Naval Academy. I challenge Hillary or Obama to take him on on national security issues. I hope one of them calls him a chicken hawk.

Just cannot understand why the other figure is used, maybe it's people trying to hide something. LOL

He's Al Gore Lite.

Twice today I've confronted a couple of his drones, and can't get them to justify their vote for him knowing of his stance on "global warming", where he wants to tax you and regulate you over something that doesn't exist. He's a Liberal, just another thief promising security in one area and taking it from you in another.

One might also say that conservatives lost their way as well. We did not do a good job some of those years where we campaigned on conservative values, but failed to enact our promises; like protecting the sanctity of marriage.

We also did not have a strong candidate this time, besides maybe Fred.

Well, the problem is entirely McCain’s. He values being a moderate and working with his colleagues on the other side of the aisle aobve everything else, as if this gives him the points and ability to ‘get the job done.’ He doesn’t believe in conservatism, and doesn’t want to be labeled one, because that puts him too far on the political spectrum to be able to work with libs nad meet them in the middle. For these two reasons it’s easy for him to attack conservatives and despise them, yet he’ll pay lip service to them when he needs the votes, and ask them to be ‘loyal’ to the party in a way he’s never been.

I think many of us underestimate the harm to the country that can be done by either Democrat candidate. We know what Carter did. We know what Slick Willie did and we know what the Witch from Wellesley will do. Obama may be even worse.

For those who say we should let the Democrats win so that the doubters can see just how bad they are, and then elect a conservative, I say you are extremely naive. The Communists, which is what both Hillary and Obama are, can destroy this country in short order. The government is already liberally salted with them throughout all our departments, especially State and CIA, and they are doing much harm at this very moment. Elect a Democrat President to go with a Democrat Gongress and we will never again see a free and honest election and our country will be destroyed. They will never turn loose of the power they gained.

Don’t left Perfect be the enemy of Good. Vote for whomever is the Republican nominee, even if it is McCain.
