McCain? No Way!
by Sen. HL "Bill" Richardson (ret.)
Chairman of the Board, GOA

Americans are being told by the mainstream media that conservatives have no other choice than to back the hypocrite from Arizona. All that is required is to pretend he is "really" a conservative. "So, crawl under the big Republican tent and vote for McCain," we are told. "Besides, what other choice do you have?"

We have plenty of choices, none of which calls for casting our vote for the lesser of two presidential evils.

First, the Republican race isn't over. Huckabee is still around and as Kansas and Louisiana should point out, the Romney vote flocked to Huckabee. Not that they loved Huckabee, but that they have zero trust in the promises of McCain. Even if Huckabee loses, what makes anyone think conservatives will vote for McCain?

Don't you liberals get it? The republican conservative believes McCain would be a vindictive president. He's proven his dislike for conservatives and would gut us at every opportunity.

Why do I say that? Because of three decades of experience as a Republican California Senator and a fifty year activist in the conservative movement. I have first hand, in-their-face experience with elitist RINO's (Republican in Name Only) office holders. They are biblically ignorant, power hungry, status seeking egotists who have no difficulty aiding their liberal Democrat colleagues whenever their arms are politely twisted. The one thing they have in common with liberal Democrats is their dislike of all conservatives, especially those who are Bible-believing. McCain, as president, would stifle the voices of elected Republican leaders and try to legislate the conservative movement out of existence.

There is no reason why any conservative should be depressed, especially if they look at past history. I clearly remember the political climate in 1964. We newly-awakened conservatives had a real friend running for the Republican nomination. Barry Goldwater defeated a liberal Republican in the primaries, but in the general election, the mainstream media slaughtered him. In 1964 it was easy to do; we had no effective political action committees, no conservative organizations, few pro-life activists, little religious participation, no talk radio, a handful of articulate conservative legislators, no fax machines and zero Internet. After the 1964 November election, all looked hopeless. Not a bright star on the horizon....But!

In 1966, we conservatives elected an actor as Governor of California. I was elected to the State Senate. The thespian and I were greener than grass but we were both quick to learn. Ron Reagan became a national star, a conservative leader in the nation’s most popular state. He couldn't be ignored.

I founded Gun Owners of America and Gun Owners of California. We became the second largest pro-Second Amendment organization in America with membership in the hundreds of thousands. We concentrated our efforts on electing pro-gunners to the legislature and stopping anti-gun legislation. We grew rapidly and were quite successful. During liberal Jerry Brown's eight years as governor, not a single anti-gun bill was signed into law. The reason was simple -- although the liberal Democrats controlled both houses of the legislature, no anti-gun legislation passed from either house to find its way to the Governor’s desk.

The entire gun movement is close to accomplishing that feat on a national level. As long as the gun community hangs together, it will make little difference on gun issues who is sitting in the White House. The same could be true of other major conservative organizations as long as they stay in the fight. We are much better off than in 1964 and much better organized.

The other good news is that some of the weak-sister Republicans are leaving office -- not willing to scrap it out with the liberal Democrats. Hooray, happy to see you go! Call Gun Owners if you need a ride out of town. We have an opportunity to replace them with tough, no nonsense conservatives. Already, some very fine men are seeking these vacancies.

We at Gun Owners intend to be very engaged in Congressional and US Senate races.

I personally will not cast a vote for the presidency -- that is, if McCain is the Republican nominee. Under no circumstances will I vote for either of the Democrats. This will be the first time in fifty years that I have made this choice. I hope it will be the last.

I’m going to write in Tom Tancredo and send the GOP a message they will understand.

lol. They won't hear you. They won't care. They won't understand. It will be an unnoticed drop in the ocean. Totally insignifant. More insignificant even than Tancredo's campaign was.

Why not just write them a letter, or call them? Tell them what you think. Then, in November, do the right thing? Why help Obama?

He's got you all convinced you should stay home.

Heaven forbid that McCain should have to earn conservative votes. Leftists always have a huge sense of entitlement and no sense of personal responsibility.

There are going to be a LOT of write-ins....enough to totally screw things up for the GOP. I keep trying to warn people of this.

Heaven forbid that McCain should have to earn conservative votes.

You obviously aren't familiar with the political landscape. In the primaries, candidates try to earn your vote. Eventually, a nominee is picked. In the general, unless you are a socialist, you vote GOP. It's really that simple. GWB didn't "earn" my vote. He got it by default, by being a better choice than the traitor socialist surrender party. McCain has also managed to be a better choice than the DEMs. It's a no brainer.

WHAT is it with "them"? There's always just two or three in every thread like this. It's like a person standing in the rain shouting loudly and exclaiming that they don't believe in rain. All the rest of us can really do is laugh.. :-) ...as they get soaked, claiming that there's no such thing as rain! :-) O.K....sure...whatever they say! :-)

Is it stupidity?...fear?...ignorance?

Probably all of the above. But I think it's more fear than anything. No FEAR!

I'm not pleased that it's looking very much like we're going to have a democrat President in 2009. But those who vote McCain (or any other RINO) will be as much to blame as we will.

LOL

I don’t care what the mainstream media thinks. I don’t care about historic analogies. I even don’t care for the GOP for that matter. I don’t vote for pretty faces, gender nor race. To my surprise still many don’t get the point. Every election is about PRINCIPLES.

Yes you vote for a person but based on your PRINCIPLES. I like all Americans have dreams, I like all have convictions, values and believes. I’ve always adhered to them, and I must say it makes it a lot easier to explain myself and yes the consequences are hard at times. Believe me I’ve had my share. Still I will not get distracted from mine just to get a GOP face in power. Most certainly I will NOT and I repeat NOT vote for McPain.

Better lose with your head up, than bow and trade off your PRINCIPLES. Obviously your principles don’t weigh that much anyway if you do so. Elections even presidential are not actions of gambling and probability to win. And to speak in these terms there’s even nothing on the table for me, so I’m not at all excited nor amused. Let me also be clear that loosing isn’t as bad as it seems once you are in the midst of a competition. It’s not about winning or loosing an election it’s about winning or loosing PRINCIPLES along the way.

Whatever the outcome of this presidential election neither side will last, since no candidate is elected on vested principles. On the one side a lot of people vote for a pretty face, race or gender, on the other for an opposition to the former or an opportunist at best. Neither has a fundament so the euphoria of any outcome will soon fade and turn to a call for something more substantive.

Therfore we have to stick to our ‘guns’ (Principles) or we will lose our face. The latter will be detrimental to future opportunities.

He failed. When his supporters fail to deliver the votes in the general needed to elect McCain, you'll blame your failure on others.

It's the liberal way.

[ The last thing Soros wants is for conservatives to stay home /s... ]

Actually you are correct.. If THAT happens real change can happen.. A large voting block Will be established.. Sphincters all over Washington D.C. will clinch.. and UGH OH! heard in the cloak room..

VOTE for McLaim and evil forces will say, see I told you so.. Scare them and they will fold like a starched shirt.. That huge resources allocated for the brain wash in media and political intimidation didnt work..

Soros does not want a political rebellion..
If so then the left is in jeopardy.. A vote for McLaim is a vote for political manipulation..
You may be open to be master baited, I am not..

I have written them dozens of letters, some with W’s pesos included. They won’t listen to what I think so why should I do anything to empower them further they are as corrupt as the DNC.

If what I do winds up helping Obama, place the blame where it belongs—The LIBERAL RNC.

There are two things in life I promised myself I would never do--kiss my sister and vote for McCain.

I am a man of my word--and I will laugh while President Obama stumbles and fumbles for four years and his heavily Democratic Congress have catfight after catfight.

P.S. Don't bring your sister around here either.

WHAT is it with "them"? There's always just two or three in every thread like this.

"Them" are a series of screennames, nothing more. One does not necessarily constitute a person--in fact, many screennames could be presented by the same person. The mantra sure seems to sound the same.

Is it stupidity?...fear?...ignorance?

It must pay well. ;-)

Look...you've already stated what's going to happen. We don't disagree on that. You will wholly blame "us" though. There's nothing we can do about this, nor are we willing to bend in your direction.

So what about it? Hillary or Obama will be President starting in 2009. What about it? We're not supporting McCain, so do you have any helpful suggestions?

It's got to really frustrate you having to deal with people like us. You put up a brave fight, but you know what's coming as well as we do. Either give us your grand plan, or STFU.
