Lebanese newspaper reports Shiite militant group orders 50,000 of its fighters to prepare to ‘curb any Israeli aggression,’ evacuates most buildings used for non-military purposes in south Lebanon; US embassy asks staff to stay vigilant

Hizbullah has raised its alert level in southern Lebanon to the maximum, following the organization leader Hassan Nasrallah’s threats to retaliate against Israel for the assassination of Imad Mugniyah, Lebanese paper as-Safir reported Saturday.

Hizbullah claims that Mugniyah, the group’s top military commander who died in a blast in Damascus Tuesday, has been killed by Israeli agents.

According to as-Safir, Hizbullah has ordered 50,000 of its fighters to be on high alert, and has also evacuated most structures used by the group for non-military purposes in south Lebanon, in order to prepare “to curb any Israeli aggression.”

The paper also reported that the US embassy in Lebanon has ordered its personnel to exercise caution and refrain from using mobile phones. American nationals in the country have also been asked to remain vigilant and maintain constant contact with the embassy.

“Alerts” if used to often, can have quite the opposite effect. Hopefully the good-guys are pushing some of the right buttons.

The jackals gnarl in the streets. The “Jewish liability” is the target of attraction.

Reading this while also watching The Wind and the Lion, one of the greatest adventure films ever made, on Turner Classic Movies bring to mind one of my favorite scenes in the film coming up shortly:

Capt. Jerome, USMC: It seems quite obvious, I would think, sir - we must seize the government and make our own negotiations.

Gummere: [incredulous] Seize the government?

Capt. Jerome, USMC: At BAYONET point!

Gummere: [snidely; to Dreighton] Well, I certainly would like to see that old son-of-a-bitch at bayonet point, huh? [chuckles]

Gummere: But it’s ridiculous; it’s outrageous, it’s lunatic!

Adm. Chadwick: Yes, isn’t it though? I think Teddy should love it!

Gummere: But, what about the French, the Germans - the British? Why we’re in the shadow of Gibraltar!

Adm. Chadwick: [slams his hand on table and stands up] DAMN THE LEGATIONS!

Gummere: [uneasily] You realize, of course, that if we fail in even the slightest way, we’ll all be killed?

Adm. Chadwick: Yes, and the whole world will probably go to war.

Capt. Jerome, USMC: Gentlemen, if we fail and are killed, I certainly hope the world DOES go to war!
[raises glass as a toast]

Adm. Chadwick: The world at war!

Gummere: A world war? Now THAT would be something to go out on...

BTW no one ever mentions who is, to me, the unsung hero of the film. That is Eden's tea guest at the film's beginning who stand tall, draws his revolver and fires on bravely knowing he faces no chance when his six shots are gone. Now that, sports fans, is true grit!

The film's Cinematographer Billy Williams played the part most convincingly.

Why do I INCREASINGLY wonder if Mugniyah was expendable and Hizbullah had him assassinated in order to “start” a war with Israel in Lebanon...all because Hizbullah is fighting to take down the Hamas controlled Pali government?

Anyone else wonder about this?

It’s possible but it’s far more likely it was an Israeli operation with some local co-operation.

Equally possible. In fact that was my first reaction on hearing of the puke’s timely demise. Either way, it looks like Hizbullah is taking full advantage in order to escalate the war with Israel due to the trouble Hizbullah is having with Egypt over border incursions caused by them warring against rival terrorist group Hamas. The result will be the same: Israeli blood spilled while most of the world says they deserve it for being the “aggressors”.

Does that mean they get their 72 raisins ahead of time?

Considering he was blown up walking out of the Iranian embassy in Syria. I think so

I hope someone slipped 72 raisins into his pocket 'cause that's all he's getting when he meets his maker

Hizbullah had him assassinated... ... or Hizbullah made it appear he was assassinated.

If Israel was responsible, I accept the death report. OTOH, if Hisbullah, I need to see more than a "death certificate".
