It was High Noon on television, and the camera kept cutting away to those narrow shots of wall clocks and grandfather clocks and cuckoo clocks and pocket watches: that annoying clonk, clonk, clonk as the seconds ticked by and the train barreled closer. You remember the film. Everybody in town knew that Gary Cooper was the right man to stand up to the bad guys coming in on the noon train. But the unctuous Henry Morgan and all the rest of the town's bankers and shopkeepers wouldn't stand with him, and Grace Kelly, the sweet religious girl who loved him and mistrusted him, was packing her bags to leave.
Well, that's pretty much the Republican party, isn't it? Nobody doubts John McCain on foreign policy and national security. Oh, there are plenty of people who dislike his positions, beginning with the core of the Democratic party, but even they know where the man stands. It's on the other issues of the old Reagan platform that Republicans remain uneasy with McCain. The fiscal and domestic-policy conservatives--that's Henry Morgan--never liked him, and the social conservatives--that's Grace Kelly--kept hoping there was some other way to live.
Now John McCain is the presumptive Republican nominee, and he needs to find a way to win over the skittish conservatives. For that matter, the conservatives need to find a way to win over the nominee. What kind of president would we have with a John McCain bitterly convinced that he has won despite, or even against, the conservative movement?

I’ve always thought High Noon was sort of silly, in a way. All the Gary Cooper had to do was offer a bottle of whiskey and a rifle to every man who would get up on a roof and shoot the bad guys down like dogs, and bingo. Fight over.
John McCain would not fight the conservatives at all as he is one of them. How long will conservatives believe McCain is a conservative at all?
The same way Bobby Jindahl won in Louisiana. I have had “yellow dog” democrats tell me they would vote Republican before they would vote for Obama. Of course in my part of the country that probably shouldn’t be a surprise. Up north it may be different. I can’t see Hillary carrying many Southern states, either.
I have been saying the same thing for months. I have a fellow snow-birder Conservative from AZ, he can't stand him. In 2000, their were rumors, some alluded to here on the Freep and by Rush if my memory is correct.
I think the Media knows it too, the Chrissy Matthews of the world, The will "Fountainhead" him in a heartbeat.
Whether it is Obama, Hilda, or McCain we have three Senators who have never created job, all who may have issues that would take to much time to type, we all loose, these are awful choices for when America needs some serious leadership, especially to lead us through such issues as entitlement reform/solvency.
We need a Churchhill not another inside activities director for the deck of the Titanic....
I am most certainly NOT forgetting- as I said, I don’t trust McCain. He’s only a “maverick” when it comes to conservative issues. He acts like an old lapdog when it comes to the media and I fear his appointments will be to please THEM- not us.
You can’t imagine how refreshing it is to get an informed answer.
Thank you.
[... What politician is going to be responsible
for uprooting 10 mil people and standing by while
truckloads of liberals line their exodus and assail
us with horror stories?...]
One with courage and a backbone.
One who doesn’t lead by consensus.
One who doesn’t care about a short sighted media fabricated legacy.
One who truly has the best long term interests of the country in mind.
We'll hold 'em all off like together, just like John Wayne, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson in Rio Bravo. ;)

First, as a country, we have the absolute right to control our border, and determine who gets to visit, who gets to immigrate, and who gets shut out, and some people should be shut out. So let's control our borders.
Secondly, for a long time, both parties have turned a blind eye to illegal immigration, and some industries, like agriculture, are irrevocably reliant on immigrant (legal and illegal) labor.
It is easy to say, "too bad - go home" but many of those people took, reasonably enough, that blind eye to be tacit approval - and that's exactly what it was. Many of those people have built lives in this country, and are contributing members of society. We owe it to them not to yank the rug out from under their lives. For these people, there should be a means to earn citizenship - and to be clear, by earn, I do not mean "be handed on a platter without effort or cost."
Many illegals, however, have abused our hospitality. They have engaged in criminal pursuits, or taken advantage of public assistance. Those illegals deserve nothing more than a one way ticket home.
No way would I let them benefit from flaunting our laws. But it’s not up to me. It's up to men like McCRat and Juan Hernandez. Why should guys like me be involved other than to pay taxes to be invaded?
I am claiming that McCain will fight the Democrats that want to Cut & Run and LOSE THE WAR.
You guys DO remember we are in a war, don't you?
Imagine each one of the Presidential candidates as Commander-in-Chief for the past year and a half:

Obama 13 months ago:

Hillary 13 months ago:
Published January 17, 2007 ........ Hillary Clinton opposes Iraq troops 'surge'

During these past few days, it has become evident that many on Free Republic would rather snub McCain than win the war. Some have even written to me to the effect that it does not matter if we win or lose the war.
Well, consider these consequences of voting for Ross Perot in 1992 and ending up with Clinton in the White House for 8 years.

February 11, 2005 .... North Korea Confirms It Has Nuclear Weapons Friday
North Korea missile test 'brings US within range'
The consequences are that, in maybe the next decade when the North Koreans further refine their missile technology, those of us who live in or near major cities on the West Coast, my family and myself included, could be obliterated in a North Korean nuclear strike if the Great Leader has a bad hair day.

Now, let's consider the consequences of bugging out and losing the War in Iraq:
1.) The fanatical Islamist mullahs of Iran will move into the power vacuum in Iraq leaving them with military hegemony of the Persian Gulf and 70% of the World's known oil reserves.
2.) With control of 70% of the World's known oil reserves, a fanatical Islamist Iran will have control of the carotid arteries of the economies of the Western World.
3.) Islamist Iran, like North Korea and Pakistan before it, is aggressively seeking nuclear weapons and the missiles to deliver them. With control of 70% of the World's known oil reserves, Iran will most surely achieve its nuclear goals in short order by bribery or economic blackmail of the European nations and/or the Japanese and/or the Russians.
4.) After Cutting & Running from Iraq, neither the Clintons nor, especially, Obama, will do what it takes to stop Iran.
5.) At that point, in ten years, those of you who live in or near major cities of the East Coast could be obliterated in an Iranian nuclear strike if the Mullahs in Iran decide that the day for achieving Eternity in Paradise by striking at the Great Satan has finally come.
6.) The deterrence doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction worked fine with the pragmatic Soviets and the ChiComs, it will probably even work with the nutty North Koreans but "Mutually Assured Destruction" means "Winning an Eternity in Paradise" to the fanatical Islamist Mullahs of Iran.

The current situation reminds me more of the farce of "Blazing Saddles" than "High Noon".
The town is in danger of being physically destroyed in the future. Instead of focusing on the physical safety of the town, everybody is in Church, feeling sorry for themselves, singing "our little town has turned to shit". Then they get riled up because they don't like the Sheriff who is the only one that will prevent the town from being physically destroyed.
"The Sheriff is a RI (BONG)"
"What?"
"I said the Sheriff is a RI (BONG)"
"What?"
"I said the Sheriff is a RINO!

Moan and groan all you want now. It's good for you.
But, come November, think about the consequences and
Yes, unless McCain is willing to make some serious apologies and concessions. He will fight alone.
McCain needs to withdraw his carbon tax scheme.
He needs to take a stronger stance on Homeland security. (he opposed everything to do with homeland security)
He needs to do something about McCain/Feingold.
He needs to promise no amnesty.
Excellent post - thanks.
OMG!!! You listened!!
Thank you!
McCain was not my first choice. I wanted Fred.
However, if we end up with McCain as the GOP candidate we REALLY need to win that war.
I am not asking anybody to love McCain or agree with him on anything except the War or even stop them from calling him every name in the book.
But, come Novemvber.....
please....
I will be out of the country for the next two weeks. It will be interesting to see how things are on the Free Republic War Home Front when I get back.
Until then, FRegards.
[some time later]Foot soldier: "Where's General McCain? We're waiting for his signal!"
Another foot soldier: "We found him! He's been on the other side, fighting US!"
It came right after Gary Cooper denounced Harry Morgan as a greedy, for-profit racist who kept poor immigrants down. It came just before Gary Cooper shot Harry Morgan's wife, and promised to do likewise to anyone who disagreed.
Guess you missed the important scenes...glad to fill you in.
;>)
That's the screen shot for this election!
Well said.
