Some Unease Lingers Despite Big Victories by Front-Runner

NASHVILLE -- Ronald Reagan has found a regular place in Sen. John McCain's stump speech, part of the Republican presidential candidate's effort to assert his conservative credentials and assure listeners that he has been a longtime "foot soldier in the Reagan Revolution."

Tre Everson, a local funeral director, listened carefully last weekend as McCain (Ariz.) appeared to be channeling Reagan in a campaign appearance here aimed at assuaging the worries of conservatives. McCain said he wants only judges who will "stand up for the strict construction of the Constitution," and repeated that he is "a proud social conservative . . . the true conservative."

Everson comes from that part of the Republican electorate congenitally suspicious of McCain -- passionate conservatives who view him as a closet moderate on fiscal and social matters, and want nothing to do with the Republican front-runner. But McCain has succeeded in easing Everson's worries about his controversial stance on immigration, which offered the prospect of citizenship to illegal immigrants, by stressing that he would "secure the borders first."

"I guess that's enough for me . . . but it isn't enough for some of my friends," said Everson, who regards himself as a McCain supporter. "People keep criticizing him, you know, on the radio and in the media. I just think it's that they know he's probably going to be the man, the nominee. Some conservatives are obviously bothered."

That was underscored by the results of Tuesday's primaries. They moved McCain closer to attaining his goal of winning the Republican nomination but also demonstrated his difficulty in closing the deal with conservatives in .......

RINO McPain is a disaster. Aren’t there any independents running? As a conservative Pub, I can’t see myself voting for McPain.

If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck.

McCain has fought tax cuts, supported liberal spending programs, co-sponsored liberal bills, worked with liberals on boondoggle educational programs (e.g., with Fat Teddy), supports amnesty for illegals, plus a lot of other things that simply don’t appeal to me. While there’s absolutely nothing I can do about it, I am NOT a happy GOP camper.

There is no acceptance of the RINO McCain from the right. Only contempt. It’s only fellow liberal RINOs who support McCain. Period.

Unfortunately it is down it McCain vs. Clinton/Obama.....Praying that McCain isn’t a complete backstabbing liberal is our best hope. 4-8 years of Clinton/Obama is not an option in my book. Sorry, but when Carter beat Ford, Reagan was already waiting on the sidelines. There is no Great Communicator waiting on the sidelines today.

I'd say more loathing and distrust, than acceptance.

Just say NO to ALL liberals and nutcases, be they dems OR RINO's.

Is Shamnesty McCain bringing his "Hispanic Outreach Director" to CPAC?

Hernandez is a certifiable traitor. He was born in Dallas, but became a dual Mexican citizen. His last job was as Vicente Fox's reconquista chief. The "New Pioneers" of his book are the illegal alien invaders/settlers he and McCain love so much.

Only a traitor would hire a traitor to promote the invasion of his nation.

I wonder if he'll show at CPAC.

the media and the leftist establishment made an end-run on conservatives long before this primary even started. THEY were prepared and we were not.

now its all over. There might not be a next time

Its all ATLAS SHRUGGED now. There might not be another election, this was not a free and fair election, we never had a chance. It was pre-planned from the start.

Perhaps those who screamed tin foil kook alert at mention of the NAU might want to rethink their comments.

They knew exactly what they were doing. we were stupid, waiting for a conservative who never came. The media was never going to allow one candidate to rise. The GOP establishment and the liberal-media-establishment are on the same side. at least for the primary.

the anti-conservative and the anti-christ will be the two candidates. There is no lesser evil on the ballot, buy guns and ammo and a place in the woods folks.

This 'election' was a fraud, and they will all be frauds from now on. We can try a rearguard action in the House or Senate but its a losing effort.

I expect them to even expand the Supreme Court and pack it will leftists, maybe even 'former' politicians.

Atlas is preparing to shrug. The Almond Tree is going to Blossom. The Liberty Tree is getting thirsty.

You bet there’s distrust. How does one trust a man with an oath to protect the Constitution that the man has already shown he doesn’t give a shi’ite about by trashing 1A rights?

Thanks. - This is my list:

Look at his record and you can easily make the leap that he is, in fact, a liberal democrat.

The man IS a democrat. - In the mold of a Lieberman on defense.

1)Endorses participation in the ICC. - so does hillary.
2)Voted against the Bush tax cuts. - so did hillary.
3)Wants Gitmo closed. - so does hillary.
4)Demands an end to waterboarding. - so does hillary.
5)Wants terrorists to have access to trial in America. - so does hillary.
6)Wants America to be bound to a "Global Warming" agenda. - so does hillary.
7)Wants amnesty, and authored and voted for McCain/Kennedy - so did hillary.
8)Does not exclude known criminals and felons from amnesty. - neither does hillary.
9)Does not believe that immigrants of any type should learn English. - Neither does hillary.
10) has zero record on appointing judges. Neither does hillary but they both did great damage to the process recently, john with the gang of .. how many? and hillary with her voting record.
11) John has a history of scandal and an ill controlled temper - so does hillary.
12) John opposes drilling in ANWAR - so does hillary.

and the difference is?

If you are determined to vote for a Democrat, why vote for one who is afraid to admit what he is? You folks who wanted McCain, have him now. I just have some questions for you. Weren’t there enough Democrats in the Democratic Party to draw your attention to them? Why did you have to hang this Democrat around the Republican Party’s neck? Since Gerald Ford I’ve cheered for my choice, and then got behind whatever Republican candidate the party chose, but not this time. You people who want this Hitleresque prima donna can have him. I don’t want any part of it.
