John McCain and RNC to walk tightrope.

John McCain, conservatives nightmare for a presidential candidate, seems to be racking up the essential numbers. But, looking beyond that, it's hard to see how McCain can win. One elephant in the room is illegal immigration. When it was brought up earlier in the race, John McCain grit his teeth, snarled and said we wouldn't see that bill again. Not because of a change of heart, but because so much of the nation threw a complete hissy fit over it.

The Clinton camp must love the fact that McCain is in the lead.

They know how much he is disliked.

McCain is like one of those gazelles you see in a nature show crossing the river when Hillary the crocodile is waiting beneath the surface.

McCain can win is by mobilizing the conservative base like Bush did but that means he loses the liberals and pass some type od socialized medicine into law. He he wants to go after a true special interest he’d gut the trial lawyers. But he won’t. John Mc Cain is the modern era Benedict Arnold. We and the dRAT’s have something in common. The base of each party is currently motivated not by any inspired support for one or more of its own candidates, but always and only out of a dread of how the country might suffer at the hands of the candidate from the opposing party. McCain can’t win. Mccain cannot win unless we have a major domestic terrorist attack in the next 9 months. I believe we will avoid any attacks with W. still in the oval office, which means we will be voting on the issue of the economy, which McCain says he doesn’t understand and Hillary promising to give away the store. Hillary will win bigger than W. won either election. Bob Dole incarnate, without the honorable character or the conservative credentials. He’s goin’ down and he’s taking the nation with him. It’s a classic McCain move. Less bad in the political choices made... possibly... but far worse in the consequences of the Clinton corruption machine. How many more US resources can Indonesia put off-limits to exploration with “donations”? He says he’ll appoint conservative judges eh? When schummer and kennedy threaten a filibuster, who’s mccain going to side with? Conservatives or his buddies in the senate? And I’ll bet that instead of seeking free market solutions to our healthcare problems, he’ll side with the liberals!

I think the point that Tall Horse is trying to make is that the RNC has set the republicans up to lose. By backing a total losing candidate. McCain will not win..the RNC doesn’t want him to.

I know this is terrible of me..but I almost want some of them to get up and snear and snarl back at him. I want the others to chant “build the fence”.

McCain is a horrible candidate. He will probably lose and would be a disaster if he won. But the real problem is that he will have negative coattails.

People get excited about presidential races--not down-ticket races. Last night, we had four times as many people at our caucus as normal--and all they were interested in was the presidential straw poll.

At best, Republicans are going to be unexcited about McCain. More likely, the regular volunteers who turn out election after election are going to cross their arms and not hang door knockers in 20 degree weather. A certain percent of unexcited voters don't get to the polls, even if they intend to. Same for disgusted voters.

The effect on our senate, congressional and state legislative races will be devastating. With McCain as the candidate, we have a significant chance of going below 40 in the Senate. This is true even if McCain wins. He will win, if at all, with independent and dem votes. Those folks will not vote Republican down-tickets.

So this is a long-winded way of saying that, if the RNC engineered this, they engineered a party-wide disaster.

"One elephant in the room is illegal immigration"

Illegal immigration is why McCain is winning. The elites and the GOP establishment want illegal immigration to continue. So they are shoving John McCain down our troats. With McCain or Hillary or Obama they win. Only with Rommey (or Paul) do they lose, so Rommey (and Paul) have to be defeated. Rarely do we get to see that there is really only one party with two wings, this is one of those rare times. "It doesn't matter who you vote for as long as you vote for us".

"Meet the new boss same as the old boss."

“Tightrope”?

Misspelled “plank,” I think.

McCain is a horrible candidate.

I am curious as to whether the virulent Romney haters, now that Mitt doesn't appear to be a 'threat" to their views, will switch their vicious and destructive attacks toward McCain... who by all measures has been far far worst for the conservative cause these past eight years.

Somehow I doubt it.

It’s back to the pre-Reagan 70’s again. We need a real leader to help us regain control of the liberal-lite party, I don’t see such a leader anywhere.......

Last night, I posted a few things confided to me by long-time GOP foot soldiers, and in a nutshell, it wasn't good. I'm ex-GOP now, but it still sucks to watch this disaster unfold.

As do I. If Huckabee was truly a viable, independent candidate, he'd excoriate McCain's endorsement by the "Republicans for Choice."

He hasn't, he won't, and P.T. Barnum was an optimist.

I think this is going to be the reverse-Woodstock. Millions of people have claimed to be somewhere where a small fraction were actually in attendance.

Obviously there are those who voted for McCain, but soon a small fraction will be willing to admit it.

I think it was Winston Churchill who said something to the effect that democracy seemed like a good idea until one spent a few minutes talking with the "average" voter.

"McCain can win is by mobilizing the conservative base like Bush ....."

My loyalty is to the republic, not the republican party. There is absolutely nothing McCain could McCain say or do in the next nine months to make this conservative believe that he is a changed man and would somehow govern against his record.

I support Romney now. But face it, all three are seriously flawed candidates. Romney has noone but himself to blame for the attacks, which correctly point out that his positions are inconsistent over time.

The difference is, we know McCain hates conservatives. And we know with virtual certainty that any change of position that takes place to mollify conservatives now is probably a sham. OTOH, We know that Romney is apparently a recent convert. But his conversion might be genuine. And, he does not apparently share McCain's distaste for conservatives.

Even more important, the party base will probably work for Romney and not stay home. So even if Romney loses, we will have a stronger senate and house than if McCain wins. McCain will have negative coattails, even if he wins--perhaps especially if he wins.

Yes, because it's Hillary's turn. In another 8 yrs., it will be the Bushes turn again. One party, two wings with different names. Get it?
