Romney Backpedals Over Bob Dole Comments

Mitt Romney backpedaled Tuesday after saying former Republican presidential candidate Bob Dole is “probably the last person I would have wanted to have write a letter for me.”

Romney made the remark in response to a letter Dole wrote to conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh in defense of John McCain.

Romney even tried to call Dole, with no luck, from his plane as he criss-crossed the country on Super Tuesday in last-minute campaigning.

“Let me make it very clear. Senator Dole is an American hero, a war hero, a fine man and a great leader for our party,” Romney said in Charleston, W.Va., where GOP voters were a holding a state convention. But he said he has nothing to apologize for.

These personal attacks among Republicans are not helping Republicans and/or conservatives.

The Democrats will overlook whatever they said about each other but character attacks, even incorrect ones, matter to republican voters and every candidates is getting tarred and feathered with them.

I don't disagree with the full context of his statement.

Fox News’ Steve Doocy: “Governor, what do you make of the letter that Bob Dole wrote to Rush Limbaugh that says, ‘Lay off of John McCain he is conservative enough?’ Do you buy that from Bob?”

Governor Romney: “Well, it’s probably the last person I would have wanted to have write a letter for me. I think there are a lot of folks who tend to think that maybe John McCain’s race is a bit like Bob Dole’s race. That it’s the guy who’s the next in line. He’s the inevitable choice and we’ll give it to him and then it won’t work.

“I think that the right course for a winning campaign against someone like Barack Obama is going to have to be somebody who can speak with energy and passion about the future of America, not another Senator who can say, ‘Well here is what I did on bill H-1234. Here is what I did on my committee assignment.’ The American people are so tired of listening to Senators talk about their bills and their committees. They want to know how somebody has accomplished something for the people of their state or their city, somebody who has built a business, who ran the Olympics. They want somebody who has been in the real economy to fix our national economy.”

Notice Romney or I didn't say anything about Sen. Dole's military service. Like the McCain campaign claimed.

Not with me. Mitt’s right. Bob Dole was an embarrassment as a candidate and had no business running but once again the checked pants country club republicans foisted him on the rest of us. He’s the poster boy of what’s wrong with the GOP.

From the article... "In Charleston, Romney said his comment about Dole was only meant to point out that 'the selection of our nominee based on someone having served in the Senate a long time … did not do well for us in that election.'"

Exactly right. Nothing to apologize for. No apology given. He stands by his statement. How is that backpedaling? Oh, I get it, you're spinning for McCain.

McCain lied about the whole thing. You just spread the lie. You remind me of a Clinton worker.

McCain's a serial liar. The only difference between him and Bill Jeff is, McCain's not nearly gifted enough to get away with it.

They should all leave Dole alone. He is a war hero, and was a long time and respectful politician. But he is very old now. He was clearly used in the letter regarding McCain.

His interview with Hannity made that clear and it was all shameful and disgusting to me. His defenses of McCain were all based on actionsMcCain took before Dole left the Senate...and not the actions he has taken since which Dole himself admitted to strongly opposing when they were explained to him on the Hannity show.

Let the elderly man enjoy his old age and do so in peace with the respect he deserves instead of getting dragged into all of this. Romney should not have said anything...as the Dole "support" letter fell apart all on its own, but my greater ire is towards McCain who no doubt instigated the whole thing to one extent or another.

Whatever. Bob Dole’s advice to essentially tell Rush Limbaugh to shut up is idiotic. That is the essential “stuff” of the story. All the rest is soap opera.

Dole ought to be encouraging a vigorous debate within the party. Instead, he is telling the strongest conservative voice in America to hush.

Since that is the case, who can blame anyone for telling Bob Dole to shut HIS mouth? Not me.

I heard the entire statement, this comment is out of context.

Another unfair hit from Carl-I-Love-McCain-Cameron, Greta even took up for Mitt against Carl, saying that in no way did he say or mean what McCain and the MSM are trying to say he said.

If anyone doesn't believe me, email her, she will answer.

Typical for Romney to talk out both sides of his mouth.

The man has no integrity.

Why does a bank-robber run away with the money? Why did Romney trying calling Dole if there was nothing to apologize about? Obviously he is at the very least backpedaling from his very rude remark. Just because Dole lost an election doen’t make his opinion anything less in this election. It’s two different elections.

Used? Nonsense.

Dole came to the aid of his friend and former colleague, whom he saw as being the subject of personal attacks.

That I don't personally think very highly of either man doesn't change that.

Dole stuck his nose in this with his letter in the first place. He is not senile. Political actions invoke political reactions. Dole can fend for himself.

I don’t think you read the letter. Rush read it on his show. I think you need to hear or read it.

If people don't see it by now they probably never will. McCain lies as often and as easily as Bill and Hill ever have.
