Thiruvananthapuram • A teacher caned herself repeatedly in front of her students at a school in Kerala the other day, provoking the children who committed an “unpardonable” offence to own up and beg pardon.
The 500-odd students who assembled at the Government Model Residential School at Painavu, near Idukki district, on Tuesday, had no inkling of what the headmistrees, Meenakshy Kutty, was about to do.
Many knew that the teachers were upset about a theft at school. Some Rs650, which a student had got as prize for participating in a competition, had suddenly gone missing.
Meenakshy Kutty briefly referred to the offence but she did not blame anyone. She told the students at the tribal school that perhaps society was to blame for creating conditions for someone to steal. There must be some reason why the children did the “stupid act”.
And then, with a cane in the right hand, she began felling blows on her outstretched left palm. She went on inflicting pain, as if there was no end to it. One of the students, so moved by the teacher’s “punishment”, came forward and flashed a Rs100 note, owning up.
The teacher dispersed the assembly and retired to her room, satisfied she had achieved what she wouldn’t have through the routine course — a blanket canning all children suspected of theft. It was then that two students came in to the room, sobbing. They fell at her feet and confessed the guilt. But she made sure it was not another instance of contrition by some one moved by her caning. The duo returned all Rs 650 to the teacher, telling they would never steal in their life.
As the story of the teacher’s self-torture reached the Government Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram, congratulations poured in. The first to ring up the model teacher at the Model Tribal School was Education Minister M A Baby. Baby was so moved that he offered to send her a special prize and acknowledge her exemplary act. But she refused to take credit. But the smart headmistress used the opportunity to make the Minister promise all help for the school to improve the infrastructure. She gave him a list on the phone. Baby agreed and perhaps the first item on the list, an LCD projector, will reach the school next week.
That’s nothing, this country is about to McCain itself. Its bound to be much more painful.
If you ever met an Angry nun with a ruler at Catholic-run children’s shelter, you would not be so quick to call her a wuss because she restricts her beating to your hand and wrist.

The news source is based in Qatar, but the geograpic name sounds like Thailand and the currency like India. Which is it?

I believe there’s an episode like this in Louisa May Alcott’s “Little Men,” where Professor Bhaer hits his own hand with a ruler until his student confesses to some minor crime.
8th grade, Sister Edward Mary. A yard stick. I shudder even at this moment.
Of course in the 4th grade (public school), Principal Rasmonson was very handy with the drilled paddle..

My fifth grade class once had a substitute teacher who was blind, deaf and mute who dealt out that ruler punishment. I was set to get a few whacks but talked her out of it. She punished the boy who got me into trouble instead.
