CBS News ^ | January 29, 2007 | Josh Kraushaar

Rep. Ron Lewis (R-Ky.) has withdrawn his papers to run for re-election, according to a spokesman in his Congressional office, adding yet another Republican to the ranks of retirements today.

According to the source, Lewis’ chief of staff withdrew the congressman’s filing papers with the Kentucky Board of Elections this afternoon. The filing deadline to qualify for the ballot in Kentucky was at 4 p.m. today.

It is unclear whether there will be any other Republicans who will qualify for the ballot.

The district is solidly Republican, though Democrats contested the seat last cycle. President Bush won 65 percent of the vote in the West Kentucky district in 2004.

Why did he do this at the last minute? And it’s “unclear whether any other Republican will qualify for the ballot.”

Well, if I were a betting man, I’d say Hillary provided an FBI file to someone.

I was just thinking a news report that he has a gay lover is about to hit the stands in the upcoming week.

It’s not as bleak as it looks, two Republicans got wind of this and filed at the last minute:

That's not at all true. Whoever wrote this article should do a bit more research. The filing deadline isn't until Thursday and others have already been filing.

Nevermind - it looks like I’m the one that needs to do more research (eats crow) - the filing deadline has been 1/31 most years that I can remember, but apparently not this time. Still, others immediately filed so this article is still inaccurate.

It’s 27 so far.

Two more upstate New Yorkers (Randy Kuhl and Tom Reynolds) are said to be thinking or retiring, as well.

I’m thinking we’re looking at the largest number of retirements since ‘94, no ? I don’t have the figures for that year. And, of course, it ain’t over, yet. I read one of the reasons Lewis is retiring is because “it ain’t fun.” Er, Ron, it ain’t supposed to be fun. When you’re in the minority, you need to work twice as hard to get your majority back again. It ain’t gonna just be handed to you (unless you’re a rodent).

It turns out, Lewis tried to hand it to his Chief of Staff on a silver platter. Not something you’d expect from a Man of the Cloth. But someone tipped off a local GOP state Senator, who now appears to be the front-runner.

Probably figured it’d be better continuity that way, but just goes to show you that Lewis probably overstayed his welcome in DC. It corrupts even the noblest of us.

What area does this guy represent? Glad to see there are indeed others filing, any idea why he is retiring?

I was afraid of that. Will have to give the family a call and make sure someone is lined up, and they elect a Conservative!

Lewis said in an interview this evening that he was homesick and that serving in Washington wasn’t as fun since the Democrats took control of Congress following the 2006 election.

Hey, my job isn't fun anymore either - can I go home too?

I thought this was supposed to be hard work, as in "hard enough to justify getting paid $169,300 per year". Is this guy really this wimpy or is something else going on?
