Pentecostal preacher pledges holy war against GOP senator
The Carpetbagger Report ^ | January 28th, 2008 at 12:50 pm | Steve Benen

Posted on 01/29/2008 9:54:51 AM PST by FewsOrange

It hasn’t generated a lot of headlines, but in the world of religion and politics, it’s a pretty big deal. Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), the ranking Republican on the Senate Finance Committee, recently asked six high-profile, hyper-wealthy Pentecostal televangelists for their financial records, under the suspicion that they’re using their ministries for personal gain. (Imagine that.)

Not surprisingly, most of the televangelists’ ministries have been loath to cooperate with the inquiry. One in particular is pledging a holy war.

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has gone after more than a few iconic nonprofits during his tenure atop the Finance Committee, including the Red Cross, Smithsonian and Harvard University.

But now the Finance ranking member and former chairman may have met his match: televangelist Kenneth Copeland of the sprawling Kenneth Copeland Ministries based in Newark, Texas.

In a Jan. 22 closed-circuit broadcast of his 2008 Ministers’ Conference obtained by Roll Call, Copeland pledges a holy war against “Brother Grassley” and the Senate for attempting to get a look at the controversial ministry’s finances. Grassley wrote a Nov. 6 letter to Copeland and five other prominent ministers requesting a variety of financial information.

“You render unto the government what belongs to the government. And you render unto God what belongs to God,” Copeland loudly intones to approving murmurs from the crowd of 1,000 ministers and their guests.

Oh, the irony is rich. These TV preachers believe the separation of church and state is some kind of Satanic, communist plot to be rejected by decent people everywhere. That is, right up until a senator wonders if perhaps they’re abusing their tax-exempt status, at which point the church-state wall is high and impregnable.

Now, I should note that, as a rule, I’m not inclined to have government officials poking around churches’ books — unless the church is receiving tax dollars or is suspected of wrongdoing. In this case, the latter applies.

Grassley contacted six ministries that has engaged in activities that certainly look like fraud. These tax-exempt ministries are required, by law, not to use donations from followers to enrich themselves, and there’s considerable evidence that they’ve done just that.

It’s no wonder, then, that some of these Pentecostal televangelists are reluctant to share information with Grassley. Copeland seems to be quite the drama-queen about it.

After a searing attack on Grassley’s tactics — which Copeland says were designed to sully his image and pressure him via the media — Copeland says he will never provide information on his donors, even if he is ordered to do so by subpoena.

“You can go get a subpoena, and I won’t give it to you!” Copeland storms. “It’s not yours, it’s God’s and you’re not going to get it and that’s something I’ll go to prison over. So, just get over it!” he tells Grassley, jamming his finger into the air. “And if there’s a death penalty that applies, well just go for it!”

I see.

As for the broader political context, because the six ministries involved are all mega-churches, filled with likely Republican voters, there’s quite a bit of consternation about Grassley’s inquiry.

Doug Wead, head of evangelical outreach for ex-President George H.W. Bush, said the move threatens to fracture the tenuous coalition of Pentecostal and Baptist voters that supported President George W. Bush in his campaigns. He said the ministers see the probe as personal because Grassley is a Baptist and the churches are all Pentecostal. Grassley argues the inquiry is about tax-exempt policy and not religious doctrine. He says he did not know the churches’ denominations before the letters were sent.

“He’s dividing the base that George W. Bush had,” Wead contended. “He’s opened this deep fissure. If you look at it as a Republican, it looks disastrous.”

Well, that’s certainly a good reason for a senator to look the other way on suspected fraud and abuse, isn’t it?

As for what kind of “holy war” these ministries might consider, we haven’t seen any details yet, but it should be interesting. Stay tuned.

Remove his tax exempt status and make him pay all back taxes.

Damn right. That’s exactly what the First Amendment is about. It is to protect churches - not to empower government to squash religious expression.

All anyone needs to do is go see why Grassley is investigating these phonies. Spending millions on elaborate property, furnishings, automobiles and airplanes — all while claiming tax exemptions as a religious organization — is enough to make anyone vomit.

Forgetting Grassley for a moment (and I have problems with him totally outside the scope of this issue) there are writers out there like the guy who prepared this piece who definitely seem to go into orgasm when they talk about someone taking down another holyroller preacher.

At the same time they ignore their friendly local neighborhood imam who'd cut off their head for shaving each morning.

Strange folks indeed.

"What’s that supposed to mean?"

Kenneth Copleland believes/teaches that if you want something, just "name it and claim it". It is a tenet of the Word Faith movement, a distorted idea fomented by the "prosperity" evangelists.

All Grassley is asking is to show why the "tax exempt" ministers are abusing the tax codes in the name of their religion. When the IRS finally takes away the tax exemption for the little church on the local street corner, blame these charlatans who abused the tax laws, not the government.

Not quite sure of what you mean. No one in the congregation is FORCED to give, those that give, give for their own reasons. They see they way the preachers live, all they have to do is stop giving.

I see the abuses of my government officials, but I have no right to refuse payment for those abuses, I think it is the government that needs looking into, not ministries.

Very good point. Governments collect their revenues at the barrel of a gun. Preachers use persuasion.

Not at all surprising to find Senator Grassley ignoring the fact that it's his finger on the trigger.

Frankly, I'd like to examine his personal finances going back about 10 years.

If there are preachers commiting armed robbery they should, of course, be locked up, as should Senators and Representatives who take bribes.

Preachers like politicians can be a lying and thieving lot. So, when Copeland referred to Grassley as brother, I am not sure if that was a religious or professional appellation. If I were on the Finance Committee, I might be looking into how banks could have had so much worthless debt on the balance sheets as assets. Grassly’s major problem is, he is as clueless as he looks. Iowa’s other Senator is not as clueless as Grassly, and therein lies the problem, Harkin knows exactly what he is doing, that is being among the most treacherous of a very treacherous bunch known as the United States Senate.

All organizations that take in money and claim tax exempt status should expect a lot of scrutiny, key word all. If Copeland is placed under advanced scrutiny we should expect the same for all the race hustlers like Jackson and Sharpton and all the Islamist surrogate ‘Charities’. Singling out Copeland et al would be selective prosecution and wrong, so Grassley need to step up and show us his intention to take on the rest otherwise the Democrats will gleefully support trashing the fundamentalist churches and pass on the rest and the Republicans will get rolled again.

The problem is that these churches gratefully accepted a tax-exempt status from the government, but these same churches resent being asked to account for their finances. If they hadn't taken the tax-exempt status, there wouldn't be a problem.

The worst of what “Christianity” offers.

Also, what value do they (TV Thumpers) offer to society? I am mystified? Do they have hospitals (like Shriners), that I am completely missing? I’ll admit living here in the hinterlands, I miss a lot.

Tommy ... it may be a foreign concept to you, but here in America, you are INNOCENT until PROVEN GUILTY. Now, what you are proposing is the red herring of the left ... I accused you of something and force you to prove your innocence. Only problem is, you cannot prove innocence. Look at Scooter Libby. He went along with a witch hunt and ended up getting convicted of perjury. What you propose is a horrible slippery slope.
