Jerry Springer:The Opera Condemned by Catholic League (Choir Sings Jesus Is Gay..Would Jesus Sue?)
http://gothamist.com/2008/01/25/jerry_springer.php ^ | January 25, 2008 | John Del Signore

Bill Donohue, president of the Catholic League – a group that exists to promote Bill Donohue, er, prevent “virulent anti-Catholicism” – is leading a protest against Jerry Springer: The Opera, which will be performed at Carnegie Hall on January 29th and 30th and stars Harvey Keitel as Springer. The show chronicles Jerry Springer’s adventures in hell, where he's forced to host an outrageous talk show whose guests include Adam and Eve, Mary, Jesus, and, as his crowd “warm up” man, Satan.

Donohue’s dutifully parsed the script and excerpted all the blasphemous material, which may not be the best tactic because after reading his synopsis, we realized we have got to see this. A sample:

Jesus then grabs the biscuit from Satan and holds it above his head before throwing it down as he sings: "I am Jesus, son of man, son of Mary, son of God. So do not, do not, do not f--- with me. I do not want your biscuit. I want your love and your respect, for I am love and I love all mankind." The chorus then sings, "Jesus is gay, Jesus is gay."

Photo from the British production of Jerry Springer: The Opera, which also drew outrage.

Okay, so maybe that does sound a little blasphemous to Carnegie Hall ears, as well as the part where the choir sings about Mary being raped by angels. But isn’t it the point of the outré libretto to use taboo subject matter as a cudgel to satirize the tabloid culture Springer hath wrought? And come on, the part where the choir triumphantly sings “Jerry Eleison”? Even the pope would have to admit that’s gold.

Speaking to amNew York, Donohue concedes that “the producers have a First Amendment right to stage the musical.” But his fear is that if Jerry Springer: The Opera isn’t stopped now, it might head for an extended run on Broadway, thus damning the entire Times Square area straight to hell. (An attempt to stage the show on Broadway in 2004 was stymied by financial problems.) Carnegie Hall reps deny the two night concert production is being staged as a tryout for hell or Broadway.

I used to think of Carnegie Hall as Hallowed Ground. Carnegie Hall is owned by the city and taxpayer money. John Turturro leads actors against Carnegie Hall eviction

A group of actors including Robert De Niro, John Turturro and Susan Sarandon is asking Mayor Michael Bloomberg to help save the Carnegie Hall studios that are home to artists who taught generations of greats.

After opening in London to unprecedented raves, the opera will rage at New York's most prestigious concert hall for just two nights. Order your tickets right away!

As bad as blasphemy is, it’s an offense against God, and He will take care of the perpetrators.

The Catholic League was founded in order to defend the ACTUAL civil rights of Catholics. It engaged in litigation, for instance. It now consists of Bill Donahue raving on television about what somebody said about Jesus or Mary.

I agree with everything he says, but who is doing ANYTHING to defend, for instance, Catholics’ (and others’) right not to pay property taxes to finance Government K-12 Sodomy Instruction Centers.

Its an opera for crying out loud.

I suppose you'd ban Wagner's "Der Ring Des Nibelungen" because of all the incest that happens during the 22+ hours it takes to perform?

Maybe we should also worry about Verdi's "La Traviata" because the heroine is a prostitute, or Bizet's "Les Pêcheurs de Perles" because two young men sing a love duet to each other, (The music is terrific in that, by the bye.)

Anyone can produce mediocre "art" and if one adds a lot of vulgarity and blasphemy, the establishment will proclaim how "original" the garbage is. Real art requires much work and talent. People who don't have talent take the lazy way out and pretend that shock value is a substitute for greatness.

‘La Traviata’ was protested in the United States in the 1850s and 1860s because of what was percieved as its immoral story.
