The Atlantic.com ^ | 01/22/08 | Marc Ambinder

Posted on 01/22/2008 6:45:45 PM PST by Reaganesque

Louisiana was thought to be a battle between Fred Thompson and Mitt Romney.

Romney has the support of two congressmen and announced teams in every district. It is winner take all by congressional district and majority receives at-large delegates.

It's the only Southern caucus, so conservative conservatives will probablt(sic) turn out.

This is Romney's to lose...

Another gold medal... albeit in the state equivalent of Olympic curling, but still...

Coming in second didn't amount to much.

Okay, so if he'd won, how much would he have had to won by for that to 'amount to much'. Second is second, and it's a lot better than a whole bunch of candidates that get all the media attention.

Mark Levin said last night on his show that if he were voting right now, he would vote for Romney. He said that he wasn’t doing an endorsement.

I am so proud of Mitt Romney!!! The way he holds his head high in spite of the hateful cheap shots and media jabs.

He does a pretty good bob and weave; you have a lot of trouble figuring out where he stands.

Does this mean that Catholics are generally anti-Huck?

This Catholic will not vote for the Huckster and not because of his religion but because I truly believe he is an idiot and would destroy America.

I don’t understand the confusion. Romney has been very clear on his positions.

There was an analysis of Iowa done that showed that the most Catholic parts of the state were least likely to vote for Huckabee. He shot himself in the foot by going to Hagee’s church.

I have never completely understood the large support for Democrats by Catholics. Seems that on so many issues the Democrats oppose the Catholic Church, but ... It's taking them a long time to get over the 'Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion' faction of the Republican party. Murray Rothbard explains all this very well.

Good for Mitt, each win makes a McInsane or Tootsie Presidency more difficult.

From the Lew Rockwell blog

Ronald Reagan Wins Louisiana Caucus Posted by Nick Bradley at 08:56 AM

According to the Shreveport Times, the Pro-Life/Pro-Family ticket won in all 7 districts last night. All non-Paul candidates pooled their delegates into a single delegate slate: Huck, Romney, Benito, McCain, Thompson. However, from what I've read at RonPaulForums, at least half of Paul's supporters had to cast "provisional ballots" because they registered jsut before the 30 November deadline.

And what about Reagan? Well, this is the handout for the Pro-Life/Pro-Family delegate slate; It has a photo of Ron and Nancy Reagan and says "win one for the gipper." This is a new low for the rest of the field, but it is what it is and I am not suprised one bit.

Non-Paul candidates also pooled their resources in Wyoming, where Paul was actually ahead on some of the first ballots, but supporters of the various neocon candidates pooled their support to win the county.

On the plus side:

1. The coalition delegate slate will be split 4 ways at the state convention, and Paul may have more than any one candidate.

2. Paul supposedly has most of the alternate delegate slots, most of which were uncontested. So if somebody doesn't show up or is ruled ineligible, a Paul delegate can step up.

So it sounds like the 'Anybody But Ron Paul' coalition won the battle, but maybe not the war. Nice.

That was crazy - they really thought he was stealing ballots??? But then again, the PaulBots are a paranoid bunch. Thats probably why their ranks are overrun with troofers and other tinfoil-hat types.

I was at the 6th district caucus. Parking was a real pain - they should have held it at a bigger venue.

Thanks for the ping! I heard because of the lack of funding that the Huckster will have to give up his jet plane. It’s going to be hard to be president without a plane. He’ll have to fly around like everybody else or take the bus. The Huckster truly is the poor people’s candidate.

There are a lot of southern Baptists in the northern part of the state - fertile ground for Huckabee.

That doesn't say much for southern Baptists. ;)

As in Nevada, the only other one organizing is Paul. Anyway, you’ve oversimplified a little in your summary. The process is:
Jan 22 - delegates to the state convention are elected.
Feb 9 - primary is held, but unless some candidate get a majority this is strictly a beauty contest. If someone does get 51% on Feb 9, *then* they automatically get 20 of the state’s delegates to the national convention; if no one gets 51% then those delegates are uncommitted. This is different than other winner-take-all states where mere plurality will get you the delegates.
Feb 16 - state convention is held and delegates to the national convention are elected.

So as far as I can tell we won’t know for certain who won Louisiana until Feb 16, though I imagine they have a straw poll at the caucuses today which will give some indication of support for different candidates.

It is like a sinner who has changed his ways. Because of it, all is forgiven. One must not focus on the sin. Focus on the redemption.

I have no problem with those principles.

Politics is about the record.

Let's not hide the record of Romney, we need to examine it carefully.

Redemption is not defined by changing positions to get elected.
