Perot blasts McCain, endorses Romney (He says senator is 'classic opportunist,' hungry for glory)
The Dallas Morning News ^ | January 17, 2008 | GROMER JEFFERS JR.

Dallas billionaire H. Ross Perot has weighed into the GOP presidential contest with a stinging rebuke of John McCain and an endorsement of Mitt Romney.

Mr. Perot told Newsweek magazine that Mr. McCain "is the classic opportunist" who is always reaching for "attention and glory."

"Other POWs won't even sit at the same table with him," the article quoted Mr. Perot as saying.

Mr. McCain could not be reached for comment Thursday, and his campaign didn't return telephone calls.

But the Arizona senator for years has denied the claims Mr. Perot made in the Newsweek story.

Mr. Perot and Mr. McCain have often clashed. Their relationship goes back to when Mr. McCain was a POW in Hanoi.

Mr. Perot told Newsweek that at one point he took care of Mr. McCain's family after Mr. McCain's former wife was in a serious car accident.

"After he came home, he walked with a limp, she [Carol McCain] walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona [Cindy McCain, his current wife], and the rest is history," Mr. Perot said.

He wasn't finished with his criticism.

He carries a grudge against Mr. McCain because he says Mr. McCain ignored evidence that live POWs were left behind in Vietnam. Mr. Perot told Newsweek that some were transferred to the Soviet Union for human experimentation, a charge Mr. Perot says he heard from a senior Vietnamese official in the 1980s.

"There's evidence, evidence, evidence," he says in the article. "McCain was adamant about shutting down anything to do with recovering POWs."

Mr. McCain has said the theory that there were live POWs was a hoax, and he oversaw a congressional hearing on the matter.

PING for fascinating endorsement. Not sure I’d want it ... but Perot may help Romney in Texas... sort of.

Jim Stockdale said that Perot was instrumental in getting many POW’s out of Nam and he would always be in his debt. I think that is why Jim ran as his running mate—not something that he aspired to, but felt indebted to do.

Well, he has a net worth of $4.4 billion. I rather have Perot for me than against me. :-)

That is true, I recall the press conference with Mclame and his best friend Kerry.

Mr. Perot told Newsweek magazine that Mr. McCain “is the classic opportunist” who is always reaching for “attention and glory.”

He could have mentioned that Huck is in the race for the same reason.

And so is just about every politician.

WOW.......Perot finally came out of hiding. All these past few years, he must have been up in the attic with his Crazy ‘Ain’t’.

It’s obvious that McCain is an opportunist who will take any side or position for publicity. He is a war hero but he is also a liberal who is just looking for power and popularity. Fred Thompson is the best choice.

I voted for Perot twice and, as a result, helped put Clinton in office both times. While I have regretted that, one of the reasons I did this was because of Admiral Stockdale who was one of the greatest men of my lifetime. He trusted Perot for his behind the scenes work for the POW’s. I’ll accept his endorsement of Romney. His endorsement means something to me.

“Mr. McCain has said the theory that there were live POWs was a hoax, and he oversaw a congressional hearing on the matter.”

A congressional hearing certainly puts the matter to rest. /s

Damn, I know McCain was physically (and mentally by corollary) greatly damaged from years as a POW, but how could he so easily endorse such a position in such a relatively short period of time?

At some point (maybe posthumously) someone who knows him is going to discuss what was going on in his mind when he did the various things he has done which puzzle the ‘he was a POW so he can do no wrong’ crowd.

Blaming Ross Perot for putting Clinton in office is ridiculous. It should have taught us something but instead we just ridicule him. Ross Perot’s running showed how disgusted people are with both the Dem’s and the Rep’s. We’re at that point right now.

It takes a nut case like Perot to know a nut case like McCain. The straight talk express is merely that - talk.

All this time I stood by Perot when others called him names.

Now I think he’s crazy.
