Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson cast himself as a consistent conservative during a lunchtime stop at the Golden Corral restaurant in Rock Hill this afternoon.
Speaking to a packed room of about 200 people, the Republican presidential hopeful touted his national security credentials and voiced support for school vouchers.
"We have to do a better job as families," he said. "Schools cannot absorb and correct all of the social ills that are going on around the schoolhouse. Goodness knows, the answer does not reside in Washington, D.C."
Some people in the back of the room strained to hear Thompson's voice over the din of kitchen noise and chatter. Thompson apologized, saying he was trying to save his voice.
Thompson's appearance kicked off a busy week of politicking in York County, with former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee scheduled to hold a 2:30 p.m. rally at the Magnolia Room at Laurel Creek. Sen. John McCain visits on Wednedsay for a town hall meeting at T-Bones on the Lake.
During his visit, Thompson made a subtle reference to the populist appeal of Huckabee, one of his chief rivals. "There's an argument going on in the Republican Party right now," Thompson said. "We're down a little to the Democrats, so do we need to be more like the Democrats? I don't think so. Call it populist, whatever you want to call it. It always winds up more government."
Thompson was scheduled to walk through downtown York with Mayor Eddie Lee at 2 p.m. South Carolina's GOP primary is Saturday.

PING!
He needs to be in venues that will pack in 10,000 people!

WARNING: If you wish to join, be aware that this ping list is EXTREMELY active.
Yep...instead of one’s where the few that are there weigh as much as 10,000 people!
What to look for:
If McCain loses Michigan and FRED does not start attacking McCain, that will seem to support a lot of speculation that Thompson is nothing but a stalking horse for McCain.
If Fred attacks McCain that will show me he is the real deal.
I will vote for Thompson if he makes it to Tennessee.
.
SC is a very rural state. It would be hard to have an event that size unless attendees are bussed in.
Early voting begins tomorrow (Wednesday the 16th) in TN. ‘See you at the voting booth!
I kind of agree. I don’t see how he can visit enough of these small places with the time remaining.
Thats right> I forgot. Will vote early for Fred.
The largest cities in SC are rather small actually, although the Greenville/Spartanburg, Columbia, and Charleston metro areas are mid-sized.
200 people at a rural event like that is rather large. Here in the nation’s fourth largest metro area, we have a tough time pulling in over 1000 for ANY political themed noonday event. I think Clarence Thomas had 2000 people show. A Mitt Romney nighttime appearance in April drew about 500-700.
Please don’t keep that McCain conspiracy garbage alive, if you think it may be true there will be plenty of time for that when it happens but helping Fred’s opponents by bringing it up in a positive thread is not a help.

Amen Brother!!! This is being pushed by Huck backers cause Huck is feeling Fred’s heat. I have heard Fred talk about the differences between him and McCain. He must deal with Huck first!
Listen,
I Love Fred Thompson. And I WILL Vote for him. However, don’t let you emotion overcome facts. I think you would agree that If McCain loses Michigan, Fred should attack McCain do u not?
I am just frustrated and want Fred to win. When the three RINOS show up, the MSM and TV will forget about Fred.
I hope the good people of SC don't.
“He must deal with Huck first”
Not if McCain loses Michigan. The door is open to pounch on not only the Huckster but McCain as well.
