Hillary Clinton's "surprising" win over Barack Obama in the nation's first primary -- in defiance of what polls had predicted and political prognosticators had projected -- has had pundits puzzled.

It must have been the tears, goes the conventional wisdom. She choked up and women raced to the rescue, voting for Clinton over Obama 46 percent to 34 percent. But were they real tears?

They were real to the extent they were there at all. What Americans witnessed wasn't the studied tear rolling all the way to the jaw line, an image of emotion perfected by Hillary's husband. It was more a catch in the throat and the hint of tears welling behind eyes that betrayed a flagging spirit.

Women recognized it right away -- a mixture of fatigue and vulnerability. "It was the first time I've ever thought she was someone I'd like to have a glass of wine with," said a female friend of mine, who is no Clinton fan.

That sentence alone was more predictive than any poll of what was about to happen. When a woman says she's ready to pour wine with another woman, she means all previous misunderstandings are forgiven. Symbolically, it's assent to the question, "Can we talk?" and recognition of an ancient

consensus: Girls stick together when boys gang up.

Hillary's human moment was sparked when a woman at a Portsmouth, N.H., event asked a personal question: "How do you do it? I mean, as a woman, I know how hard it is to get out of the house and get ready. Who does your hair?"

However much time Hillary spends "primping", I doubt she even comes close to John Edwards.

How do we know if it was the welling up? How do we know if it’s because of Obama for whatever reason, color, age, etc.? How do we know her win wasn’t because the Clintons cheated? I still don’t understand why he lost—they got it right about McCain and Romney but not Clinton and Obama.

They couldn’t have been real tears...that requires a heart and understanding the concept of remorse. I think it was a calculated risk. (Look what happened to Ed Muskie when he tried it.) Boortz went off on her about it, saying how pathetic is it to allow yourself to be swayed by a few tears. (Like so many others, he’s saying the polls weren’t in error, there was just a monumental switch because of the act.) He also mentioned that going boo-hoo each time things get tough is not the image he wants his leader, and the leader of the Free World, to project. I agree.

I usually buy what Rush says but on this I don’t. It just doesn’t sound right to me. I’d buy dirtytricks on the part of the campaign first.

Especially in New Hampshire, where blacks are 1.1% of the population.

I personally thought that this had more to do with the differences between the voting and polling (even the exit polling) than Hillary's phony tears.

Some of the Democrats felt it necessary to tell the pollsters the politically correct thing even though they couldn't actually bring themselves to vote for Obama.
