FEAR OF CRYING UNFAIR (a treasure trove of false premises and nonsequiters)
New York Post ^ | January 10, 2008 | ERICA JONG

I wonder whether we now know. The meaning of tears changes with the times.

When I was a kid, boys didn't cry. By the time I became an adult, men were praised for being able to cry.

But with Second Wave Feminism, crying was prohibited for women. We wanted to be tough. We wanted our men to cry.

Now Hillary Clinton "cries" and everyone cries foul. Just using her feminine wiles, they say. Playing unfair, they say. Bill Kristol and Maureen Dowd call her manipulative, scheming and false.

She didn't even cry - just misted up - and what a hullabaloo.

If Barack Obama cried, would we all cry with him?

If John McCain cried, would we believe we were a Christian nation?

If Bush cried, would we think the war in Iraq had succeeded? Would we invade Iran? Pakistan? Venezuela, North Korea?

If the pope cried, would crying be a sacrament?

You see the problem.

Crying means strength for men and weakness for women. Role reversal has got us. Now it's brave for men to cry, but it's verboten for women.

Look at Hillary's problem. What's fair for women has shifted in our lifetime.

Far from being an automaton, a robot, she's a woman in a changing world. Me, too.

We grew up with one set of rules and came of age with another.

Cry or not? Stick with philandering husbands or not? Give up your name or not?...

What was once presumed to be right was now wrong.

I went through these changes, too - which is maybe why I was married four times. Every time I thought I knew the rules, they changed.

The fact is, women are always in the wrong. Our culture is sexist and we don't even see it....

Two quotes struck me as special howlers: "Brave for men to cry" and "Now Hillary Clinton 'cries' and everyone cries foul. Just using her feminine wiles, they say."

I guess it would be too mean-spirited and chauvinist to advise “Just suck it up!”

Erica Jong is still alive? Who Knew? (Who cares?) "Now it's brave for men to cry, but it's verboten for women" - Erica, if you believe that one, just wait until any male candidate tears up because campaigning is tough (as hillary did) and see what happens.

Reading garbage like this may cause one to reach the conclusion that women are crazy.

Hard to believe there were four men crazy enough to marry this whack-job!

So Ms. Jong complains about growing up with one set of rules and coming of age with another? Wasn’t that the whole point of the women’s lib movement; to change the rules? Now she’s complaining about getting what she wanted.

Crying is a self-indulgent and incapacitating act whether performed by males or females. It interrupts the person's ability to find solutions and plan a course of actions to resolve the problem.

Personally, I don't want a president who thinks of himself or herself as a victim and brings to a critical office all his or her psychologically damaged baggage.

BTW, I recall Bill took acting lessons from Tom Hanks as to how to cry.
Tears are not enough because they can't be noticed by enough cameras.
Better to rub the eyes for those in the back rows, unless you're wearing mascara.
