:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
Still in Control

Pervez Musharraf was calm, confident and—despite a flurry of rumors—not about to announce his resignation. Instead, the Pakistani president's "concession" to his troubled nation was an announcement that he would allow Britain's Scotland Yard to help local law enforcement agencies with their investigation into last week's assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto.

Speaking in a nationally televised address two hours after Pakistan's election commission announced the postponement of the ballot to Feb. 18, six weeks later than had been scheduled, Musharraf was notably deferential in his remarks about Bhutto, often invoking her "martyrdom" and extolling her liberal democratic credentials. "May she go to heaven," he said. "I stand for the same things she said." Read More

Oh my gosh, totally believable and I’m glad you were awake.

I’ve experienced a few hair raisers myself over the years and now I am allergic to hospitals.

“No new trial for China-born engineer in defense export conspiracy (Chi Mak faces up to 45 years)”
AP on Bakersfield Californian ^ | 1/07/08 | AP
Posted on 01/07/2008 6:20:04 PM PST by NormsRevenge

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A federal judge denied a motion Monday for a new trial in the case of a Chinese-born engineer convicted of conspiring to export U.S. defense technology to China.

U.S. District Judge Cormac Carney rejected Chi Mak’s motion after a hearing that included testimony from several defense witnesses.

Carney set Mak’s sentencing for March 24. Mak could face up to 45 years in prison.

Mak, 67, was convicted last May of conspiring to export U.S. defense technology to China, including data on an electronic propulsion system that prosecutors said could make submarines virtually undetectable. A jury also found him guilty of acting as an unregistered foreign agent, attempting to violate export control laws and making false statements to the FBI.”

“Man jailed over terrorism charge”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “A man in e-mail contact with so-called “lyrical terrorist” Samina Malik has been sentenced to four-and-a-half years after admitting three terror charges.

Al Qaeda-trained Sohail Qureshi, 30, was arrested in October 2006 as he prepared to board a Pakistan flight at Heathrow to fight overseas.

The Old Bailey heard he planned to take military-style equipment on board.

The court heard Qureshi wrote in an email: “Pray that I kill many, brother. Revenge, revenge, revenge.”

After the case a senior investigating officer described Qureshi as a “serious terrorist” who hoped to kill many people.”

International Flight Causes Health Scare At Pearson Airport (Canada)
Tuesday January 8, 2008

An Air Canada flight arriving in Toronto from Israel Tuesday night was the source of a major health scare at Pearson International Airport. According to reports 75 of the 200 people aboard the flight from Tel-Aviv were very ill upon arrival and experiencing serious flu-like symptoms.

Air Canada Flight 85 landed at 7:15pm at Terminal One some of those on board were reportedly placed in immediate quarantine. Airport emergency personnel were covered head to toe in protective gear as they treated passengers, an unsettling sight for other air travellers.

"We had some people in our lineup going into customs that were really concerned," said Andrea Di Bartolomeo, travelling from Tampa Bay, Florida. "Half of them (emergency workers) were wearing masks and half of them weren't, so that's why we were kind of confused." "They actually told us to stay back 100 feet," added Kimberly Stanford, a witness returning from Barbados. "They had everybody in their white suits and everything."

The other 125 passengers aboard the same flight were allowed to go home following a lengthy delay, and the Greater Toronto Transportation Authority did signal an all-clear regarding any public health threat. However, at least three of the 75 ill passengers, all believed to be part of the same tour group, were taken to hospital with unknown symptoms.

There's no word on what tour company they were with, or what their final destination was.

Fatah al-Islam's Abssi to Lebanese Army - You will not live safely

"America's intervention forced a deal. They told the commander, 'If you want the presidency, then you must present the head of Nahr al-Bared,'" he said, meaning Suleiman was pressured to destroy the camp.

The more than three-month siege at the camp destroyed large parts of the shantytown. The government has said about 220 militants and 168 Lebanese soldiers were killed, while Palestinian officials have said 47 Palestinian civilians died.

"This was only the beginning ... By God you will not live safely," Abssi said. "The mill of war has started to grind ... between the infidels and the believers."

Man jailed for plotting revenge terror mission

Sohail Qureshi, 29, a dental assistant, was stopped at Heathrow airport with military equipment, thousands of pounds in cash and an autobiographical book called “My father the bomb maker.”

In internet conversations, Qureshi claimed to have been trained by al-Qa’eda and said he was going to Pakistan, Afghanistan or Waziristan, an area which straddles the borders, for two weeks, adding: “Pray that I kill many, brother. Revenge, revenge, revenge.”

Muslim inmates planned jail kidnap

A prison gang of suspected al-Qaida terrorists planned to kidnap and kill a corrections officer at a London prison, it was reported Tuesday.

Officials learned of the alleged plot after finding plans of the alarm system at Belmarsh Prison in possession of an inmate on Christmas Eve, the Daily Mirror reported.

I will die as a martyr

Three Muslim militants on death row for the 2002 bombings on Bali island urged the Indonesian government on Monday to execute them in the "Islamic" style of beheading.

"I am ready for death, but not using the evil law (of the Indonesian government)," Ali Ghufron said during a visit of about 50 members of his family and friends at Batu prison on the Indonesian island of Nusakambangan.

"They should behead me because that is God's law, and God willing, I will die as a martyr," he said.

“Missile Defense Plans Face New Hurdles”
By Patrick Goodenough
CNSNews.com International Editor
January 08, 2008

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “(CNSNews.com) - Kicking off a series of diplomatic initiatives that could decide the fate of the Pentagon’s vision for ballistic missile defense (BMD) in Europe, Poland’s new prime minister will visit the Czech Republic this week to discuss the plan.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s visit to Prague comes shortly after his foreign minister, Radoslaw Sikorski, raised misgivings about the U.S. proposal, which would see 10 missile interceptors deployed in Poland and an associated radar installation in the Czech Republic.

Sikorski said in a weekend interview with Poland’s Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper that the government, which came into office following elections last October, wanted clarity on the risks and benefits of going ahead with the project.

“We feel no threat from Iran,” he said.

The U.S. says the BMD shield, which entails missiles being fired to intercept and destroy enemy missiles outside of the atmosphere, will help to defend Europe and North America against possible future threats from such countries as Iran.

Russia, an ally of Tehran, is vigorously opposed to the move, which is sees as an American attempt to undermine its nuclear deterrent and reduce its influence in a region formerly under Soviet domination.”
