LAUREL, Md. — An inmate who escaped from a Maryland hospital with a guard's gun and shot a driver in the head in a carjacking during his getaway is dead, Prince George's County Police told FOXNews.com

Kelvin Poke, 45, was shot and killed during his capture, apparently in an exchange of gunfire with officers near Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Md., according to a spokesman for Prince George's County Police Department.

Poke was pronounced dead at Prince George's Hospital Center, said Suzanne Almalel, a spokeswoman for Dimensions Healthcare System, which operates the hospital.

I’ve been praying for all involved in this whole situation. Thankfully, no more will be traumatized, nor injured.

...near Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Md.

It was nice of the perp to save gasoline that way. Al Gore would be proud of him.

From the story...

Mark Vernarelli, a spokesman for the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services, said there was nothing to indicate the guards failed to follow proper procedure.

Uhmmm... Maybe the fact that an inmate managed to overpower two guards and escape with their weapons?

What are the odds that the guards in question were either female, overweight, grossly out of shape, or some combination of the above

It should be a job requirement that a guard is in better condition than the inmate. Perhaps we should also take away the inmate weight rooms

Poke escaped from the Pokey, then Poked a guard and stole his gun.

Poke Poked the gun at an innocent driver, shot him and took off with his car.

Poke got into a gunfight and got Poked in the head by a slug. Now, he'll get Poked away for a dirt nap and won't be Poking around anymore.

Losing a fight doesn’t mean you failed to follow procedure...only that you failed to complete the task.

It's a shame that it took 45 years to dispose of this piece of excrement. He was probably a PITA his whole worthless life.

This is the SECOND time this has happened. Back in November a prisoner from the same prison said he was having “chest pains” and was taken to the same hospital. He over powered the female guard and was on the loose all day until caught. You’d think the authorities in Marylnad would get a clue by now. So an innocent citizen gets shot in the head by this monster due to the stupidity of Maryland prison officials. Well at least they’re no taking them to Howard County General hospital.

As soon as I saw his picture I figured there would be questions and controversy. Did police act too soon, did they use excessive force, etc etc. Count on it. I’m surprised they gave a description of him after his escape. Maybe they should have just referred to him as “a male” to be PC.

Sounds like this scum was a one man reign of terror. Give a medal to the cops who shot him. Taxpayers won’t have to pay for his housing or meals anymore.

MSNBC news said he had leg shackles, but no belly chains. I work where prisoners come in on a regular basis. They are not only in both belly chains and leg shackles, but have an add’l 3’ chain between every pair. These guys believe in security. I can’t imagine what PC policy allows security to be so lax.

Even with the county jails I deal with in Rural PA, belly chains are standard practice for all transports.

Of course, if this were the first time it happened, maybe they could say that with a straight face.
