Dem presidential candidates respond to Bhutto assassination

Compare and contrast. Whose judgment do you trust?

CLINTON: "Today the world once again is reminded of the dangers facing those who pursue democracy and free elections, in Pakistan and elsewhere in areas that are rife with conflict and violence and extremism and anti-democratic forces at work," Clinton said..."I have known Benazir Bhutto for a dozen years and I knew her as a leader. I knew her as someone willing to take risks."

"I hope that if there is any opportunity for the government and people of Pakistan to respond to this tragedy appropriately, it would be to move more steadfastly and determinately toward democracy," Clinton said. "She has given her life for that hope, and I know that the people of our country stand in solidarity with those who believe as we do in the rights of people to be heard at the ballot box."

Clinton continued: "When I think about our democracy and the intensity of feeling that people have demonstrated already in our election because we take our elections seriously, we know how important it is," she said. "The decision that will start here in Iowa in one week."

OBAMA: It’s a tragic situation. My heart goes out to the families. But it’s an indication that we are in a dangerous world right now that we have to apply good judgment in our foreign policy," said Obama.

"We’ve been distracted by Iraq. We have not been paying attention to Pakistan for several years and as a consequence we have had a subversion of democracy at the same time we have ignored or at least not dealt with the growing threat of Islamic militants in Pakistan. If anything, Iraq has helped to spur some of the militancy in Pakistan. Now moving forward we have to send a message that we stand strong with the Pakistani people in moving the democratic process forward but we have to continue to press, to deal with this on going chaotic situation with the militants in Pakistan."

When asked how he would react to this situation if he were president today, Obama said, "I think it's too early for us to know exactly what the situation is. Obviously we have to figure out who will take responsibility for the assassination."

"I think one of the things that I would immediately do is to contact not only Musharraf but those in the military to determine how the security and the safety of nuclear weapons are being dealt with. That is something that obviously has to be the number one priority during a period where there may be instability and we have to make sure that that is being dealt with."

EDWARDS: "She was an extraordinary and courageous woman who obviously cared more about democracy and the people of Pakistan and the children of Pakistan than she did about the great risk to her own life," Edwards said. "She served her country admirably as others had. And she had gone back to Pakistan for the purpose of promoting the democratization of Pakistan which is a noble cause."

"I have a call in to President Musharraf who I also know. I want to talk to him about the importance of continuing on the path to democratization. Its very important under these circumstances and these kind of times for America to show both strength and principle. To be a calming influence to be a reassuring influence and to continue to promote democratization in Pakistan."

When asked if Musharraf should step aside, Edwards said, "I don't think now is the time to talk about things like that. I think the important thing for America to do is show that we continue to stand behind the principles of democracy that we always stood behind, that the president of the united states and the presidential candidates be a calming influence - not a disrupting influence - in times like this."

None of the above. Including Edwards.

Within 24 hours those quoted will openly blame Bush for the assasination. They’d have done so here, but they haven’t had time to test poll the right phrase....

Too late, Madeline Albright was already blaming Bush’s failed foreign policies in the Middle East and blah, blah, blah ..... on MSNBC just minutes after she was pronounced dead.

I bet she does; I was waiting for her statement. Be right back.

Maddy Notsobright isn’t running for President.

That said, thanks, I’d say its the first ‘trial balloon’ from the Democrats that are running.

I knew Benazir Bhutto, Senator. You’re no Benazir Bhutto.

Snip: (this is the two-sided Hill, observe)

Benazir Bhutto and Hillary Clinton have strong ties. Bhutto has hired Clinton campaign staffers. See this for some Bhutto background on corruption and political ties here in the US. It’s no wonder the Clinton campaign has been silent on the matter of Pakistan and Ms Bhutto.

BTW, Forgive me if you think my purpose was to speak ill of the dead... It pissed me off to see her killed, just like it would if it were Pelosi, Reid, Durbin, Hillary or even JFK. But for our own good, we have to look at some facts and where things might stand now.

Ping me with different takes.
