Harvard law professor Mary Ann Glendon
DC (LifeNews.com) -- A pro-life congressman has issued a letter to Senate Democratic leaders asking them to stop delaying a confirmation vote on a pro-life attorney President Bush nominated to be the ambassador to the Vatican. Rep. Vito Fossella wants the Senate to confirm the appointment before Pope Benedict XVI visits the U.S. next year.
Fossella, a New York Republican, wrote to Senators Hillary Clinton, Charles Schumer, Joe Biden and Richard Luger on Wednesday.
The nomination of Harvard law professor Mary Ann Glendon has been on hold due, in part, to blanket Democratic opposition to all of President Bushs remaining nominees.
In a statement LifeNews.com obtained, Fossella said it is imperative to have an Ambassador in place as quickly as possible to dignify the visit of the Catholic leader.
The current Ambassador, Francis Rooney, recently resigned and is expected to leave office before the Popes visit in April 2008.
"Ever since President Reagan formalized diplomatic relations with Pope John Paul II in 1984, the position of Ambassador to the Holy See has had the important role of strengthening the partnership with the Vatican on issues concerning the international community," Fosella said.
"The Senate should not allow this important Ambassadorship to sit unfilled due to partisan bickering," he added.
However, according to the American Spectator, a Republican senator placed her nomination on hold because she has served as an advisor to Mitt Romney. The Republican presidential candidate has received significant criticism over his change of position on abortion.
"[The nomination] is DOA as far as we are concerned," a senior Republican Senate aide told the magazine. "Glendon isn't going to get this without a fight from the White House and we don't think that is going to happen."
One Republican leader the magazine interviewed said the nomination may move ahead but not until the Spring after the presidential primary battle has subsided.
Bush's nomination follows the trend of keeping pro-life advocates in the key diplomatic position.
Glendon has a long-standing pro-life position and her 1987 book, "Abortion and Divorce in Western Law" criticized the Roe v. Wade decision that allowed unlimited abortions.
"What is clearly 'old-fashioned' today is the old feminism of the 1970s with its negative attitudes toward men, marriage and motherhood, and its rigid party line on abortion," she has said.
She has urged society to build a culture that is respectful of women, supportive of child-raising families and protective of the weak and vulnerable.
Baby killer party in denial, hell will be their reward.
Republicans better remember this in the future. If a Democrat is in office, Republicans better obstruct in the same manner. None of this “bipartisan” crap that our guys always seem to do when they are in the minority.
Notice how we never “Borked” one of Clinton’s Supreme Court nominees? Yet the Democrats tried to block Alito and Roberts, to the point where we had to threaten to remove the filibuster all together to get even half of the decorum we showed them?
Why do our guys always have to abide by these “gentlemen’s agreements” but they play in whatever manner they want that will gain them the most?
Governor Mitt Romney On The Nomination Of Mary Ann Glendon
Boston, MA Today, Governor Mitt Romney issued the following statement on the nomination of Mary Ann Glendon, the Harvard University Learned Hand Professor of Law and Co-Chair of the Romney for President Advisory Committee on the Constitution and the Courts, to be the next Ambassador to the Holy See:
"I commend the President for nominating such a distinguished American to be our next Ambassador to the Holy See. She will serve our country with the honor and dignity we expect from those who represent our country's values abroad. While I may have lost her trusted counsel to our campaign, our country has gained an extremely gifted Ambassador. I wish her the best as she prepares for her confirmation and service in the Vatican."
It will never happen because all we have is “pretend politics” where the illusion of 2 different parties is maintained only to keep the cumps in line.
Glendon is solid.
If she is helping Romney, this should give us confidence in him.
Vito Fossella is the only GOPer from New York City. For those who don’t know him, he’s a great guy and strong conservative.
Thank you for that input; I was not aware of this.

Glendon was a member of President Bush's Council on Bioethics, advising the president on moral and ethical issues related to technological developments in bioethics. She has frequently criticized radical feminism and defended the Church's position on life issues.
"The challenge of the church is to keep abreast of changes, but not dumb down its doctrine to the spirit of the age," she said in an earlier interview with the AP. "Contrary to popular stereotype, John Paul II has done a great deal to put women in many responsible positions."
In 1994, Pope John Paul II appointed Glendon to the Pontifical Academy of Social Sciences. In 2004, Glendon became the highest ranking female advisor to the Church when she was named president of the Academy.
In her capacity as a legal specialist in the field of bioethics, Glendon has been a leader in the Catholic opposition to same-sex "marriage," and has acted as an advisor to Governor Mitt Romney's presidential campaign.
I recall reading about her joining Mitt's campaign team. Most impressive. I wish her well! : )
Thank you for the heads up, RG! : )
Vito was the last Republican congressman I ever had. Since then, I had Baghdad Jim Mcdermott for two years, and Rush Holt for the past year.
Ping!
