The problem I have with the law is that anyone who is ever committed to a mental institution is essentially barred for life from purchasing a firearm.

There is no period of limitation, and even being declared free of mental illness by a certified mental health professional does not create a presumption that one ought to have one's right to purchase a firearm restored. I think there might be a way to get that right back, but it's purely at the discretion of the government.
