In something of a coup, Mike Huckabee picked up the support of the young Cuban-American Speaker of the Florida state house, Marco Rubio, this morning.
But Fred's camp tossed a bit of cold water on the affair and offered yet another reminder (as if Drudge wasn't doing his part to keep us posted) about the amount of oppo that there is to be dropped on Huck's head and how seemingly unprepared his campaign is for the incoming.
From this morning's Miami Herald:
Although the candidates kept it polite on stage, Fred Thompson's campaign circulated press clippings from 2002 in which Huckabee called for an end to the trade embargo with Cuba. In a letter to President Bush, Huckabee wrote at the time: ``U.S. policy on Cuba has not accomplished its stated goal of toppling the Castro regime and instead has provided Castro with a convenient excuse for his own failed system of government.''
That stance is bound to rile many Cuban Americans in Miami-Dade, who believe that the embargo helps undermine Fidel Castro's repressive regime.
Huckabee is certain to face questions about the embargo at a Monday morning press conference in Miami, where he is expecting an endorsement from Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, one of the most prominent Cuban-American Republicans in the state.
Caught off guard, Huckabee's campaign said two hours after the debate that he had since changed his position on the embargo after consulting with Cuban-American leaders. ''He's committed to vetoing any legislation that lifts sanctions on Cuba,'' said Huckabee spokeswoman Alice Stewart.
Isn't that conveeeeenient.
“he had since changed his position..”
.................
Again
But of course.
OOPS!
Nothing matters except Huck’s slick folksy charm. Just stop posting this, it confuses us.
As a Tennessean, I have always thought that Fred’s slick folksy charm was what attracted people.
Caught off guard ...Caught off guard about his own position? How lame is that?
I don’t think I have ever seen a candidate who was this much less than what he was marketed to be. Mike Huckabee is essentially one big Huckster.
Isn’t if funny how some people’s names fit the circumstances they find themselves in. I’ve seen it a number of times.
From now on I’m going to refer to Huckabee as HuckIbee.
This guy has been on the wrong side of way too many issues for me to back. If he had changed his stance on an issue or two over the years, I might be able to accept it. This guy seems to have become a totally new person this election season, if we’re to believe him. Well, I don’t.
On too many issues he’s still far left of where I’d like to see him. Adios Senior HuckIbee.

Good job, Fred!!! Keep it up.
I figured out how Huckabee knocked Romney out of first in Iowa.
Its obvious now that he went after the voters that like flip-flopers.
Actually, I don’t mind so much people changing their positions (obviously, since I support Mitt).
I’d like to see evidence they had a reason to change their position, and that they made that decision before being caught “off guard” by a question about a former position.
So in this case, where is the press release or other public statement by Huckabee repudiating his previous position and stating that he supported the embargo?
Surely he didn’t just change his mind in the last two hours, so where is the evidence he changed his position?
Fred’s not slick. He’s smart and he’s folksy, but he doesn’t have any slick in him. However, Huckabee needs to be drained on a bed of paper towels.
I have had it. Hucksterbee is now in the same category as Romney as a person who just says what he thinks people want to hear.
Personally, I promised myself to never vote for anyone from Arkansas after the Clinton’s emerged.
And as President how many times will he change his now positions back to his then positions ..or his now positions that were changed back from his then positions that were changed from his way back then positions?
MEDIA ADVISORY, Dec. 9 /Standard Newswire/ --
In 2002, Governor Huckabee strongly advocated lifting the embargo against Cuba saying it "harm[s] our own agricultural and business interests," "has not helped the people of Cuba" and has "provided Castro with a convenient excuse for his own failed system of government."
"All four House members, both senators and Governor Huckabee strongly support doing away with the trade embargo." (Kevin Freking, "Legislators Call For Ending Ban On Cuba," Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 3/22/02)
"'The United States' policy of unilateral embargo against Cuba continues to harm our own agricultural and business interests here at home and has certainly not helped the people of Cuba,' Huckabee wrote in his Feb. 14 letter [to President Bush]. It's not right to continue to make American farmers bear the burden of a policy that hasn't worked, he said. Huckabee cited a study by Texas A&M University reporting that the embargo hurt Arkansas more than other states, costing Arkansas lost farm exports of $ 167 million a year and a loss of almost 4,000 jobs." (Michael Wickline, "End of Cuban Trade Embargo Benefits Children, Snyder Says," Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, 3/29/02)
"In a letter to President Bush, Mr. Huckabee wrote, 'U.S. policy on Cuba has not accomplished its stated goal of toppling the Castro regime and instead has provided Castro with a convenient excuse for his own failed system of government.'" (Letters, "Time To End Embargo Against Cuba," Washington Times, 2/27/02)
"Huckabee, the GOP governor of Arkansas, wrote to President Bush seeking action against the embargo." (Jeffrey Birnbaum, "Business to Bush: Let Us Into Cuba!", Fortune, 5/27/02)
HUCKABEE..MR PRESIDENT, LIFT THE EMBARGO
Maybe God told him to change his position.
