Attorney: Woman didn’t know about online taunts(Myspace suicide woman appears on Today Show)
MSNBC ^ | 12/4.07 | Mike Celizic

Lori Drew regrets not stopping her daughter and an employee from using a fake MySpace account to mislead Missouri teenager Megan Meier, but Drew’s lawyer claims she had no knowledge the prank had taken a nasty turn until Megan committed suicide.

“She knew these girls were doing it and she didn’t stop it,” attorney Jim Briscoe told TODAY’s Matt Lauer during an exclusive interview Tuesday. “She wishes she did. If she could turn back the clock, that’s the part she would do differently.”

Drew has yet to speak publicly about the events leading to Megan’s death in October 2006, and Briscoe’s appearance on the show was the first time anyone has presented her side of the story.

Eh, well, that’s what happens when you act all childish and manipulative. Real grown ups don’t want to do business with you.

This is a difficult case, however if I were the grieving parents I don’t think I’d be taking it out in Court because it is so difficult to prosecute. Of course, I’m from the South, so I’m thinking vigilante justice...Suicide is difficult at best to litigate...I say just socially smear the offending parties and run them out of town like child molesters and make sure that they can never settle anywhere, ever. Exile those vile parents. And ship the kid off to a lesbisan prison camp for life. Legally though, it will be difficult, however much they deserve to go to Hell.

This new story of hers is a lie compared to what she told police a year ago. From the original police reports posted at http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/years/2007/1120072megan2.html

"Drew stated in the months leading up to Meier's daughter's suicide, she instigated and monitored a myspace account which was created for the sole purpose of communicating with Meier's daughter. Drew said she, with the help of temporary employee named Ashley, constructed a profile of a good-looking male on myspace in order to find out 'what Megan was saying online' about her daughter. Drew explained the communication between the fake male profile and Megan was aimed at gaining Megan's confidence and finding out what Megan felt about her daughter and other people. Drew stated she, her daughter and Ashley all typed, read, and monitored the communication between the fake male profile and Megan. Drew went on to say the communication became 'sexual for a 13 year old'. Drew stated she continued the fake male profile despite this development."

Italics mine. More at The Smoking Gun.

While I feel for Megan’s parents in their time of loss, I find it odd that they either failed to monitor the online activity of their daughter or didn’t object to the situation until after her suicide.

They are quick to claim that the other mother knew what was going on, but where were they? Did they really allow themselves to be so oblivious of their daughter’s online life despite knowing of her precarious mental state?

I find much of my sympathy for them waning in the face of what looks to me like an attempt to dodge their own parental responsibilities and obligations.

Had both sets of parents responsibly monitored their childrens online activity this may or may not have had a different outcome. While Megans parents were lax in monitoring her activity, the other “mother” (acted more like a child from what Ive read) not only was lax in monitoring but was an active participant. That to me is outrageously irresponsible and a disgrace.

And what were they supposed to have been monitoring? A (electronic) pen-pal relationship with a boy?

She is just playing the same manipulative game she played with megan only THIS time it is on the Judge, turning the tables to claim that SHE was the victim. She disgusts me, her and everyone involved.

After bringing up 5 teens who are now adults I think its best to stay out of teenager's fights as much as possible. Usually they will work it out . But I have dealt with parents who will never admit their little darlings are EVER to blame...

I don't like myspace & my youngest now 8 yr old daughter will never get a myspace. I told the older single ones it is silly to put your life on the internet for the world to see. Even my friend's have myspace & pages of their children & what is going on in their lives. Lori Drew IMHO is full of crap. Her story seems to have changed & if she & her husband were smart they would move & get on with their lives where nobody knows them. Her actions show that she has never grown up & it is very disgraceful.

I certainly don't disagree that Ms. Drew at best showed extremely poor judgment and maturity.

My concern is that the message Megan's parents are seeking to spread is that the government should be the protector of our children via laws criminalizing untrue chatting. I would rather they promote the idea of parents stepping up and doing the protecting themselves.

Lies. According to stories I read earlier, she laughed about it and bragged to a neighbour girl (who following the suicide informed Megan’s parents), that she was going to “mess with Megan”, then after the suicide stated that she didn’t feel guilty about it because Megan had attempted suicide before (not true according to Megan’s mom.)

I agree with you, I think these sickos should simply be shunned, as what seems to be happening now. Their business is closed due to bad reputation, I think they should leave it alone and move on, public justice has been served. As for the offenders themselves, I wouldn’t trust them with my dog.

From the article:
"Megan, who was 13 when she took her life, had entertained thoughts of suicide before and was on medication for Attention Deficit Disorder and a bipolar condition."

If it were my daughter, and she had these conditions, you can bet you last nickel that I would have monitored this '(electronic) pen-pal relationship with a boy' and everything else in my daughter's life. You wouldn't?
