Romney to Address His Mormonism
New York Times ^ | December 2, 2007 | Michael Luo

Posted on 12/02/2007 2:57:55 PM PST by Zakeet

Mitt Romney will deliver a speech entitled “Faith in America,” addressing his Mormon religion, on Thursday at the George H.W. Bush Presidential Library in College Station, Tex.

His campaign is describing the address as an opportunity for Mr. Romney to “share his views on religious liberty, the grand tradition religious tolerance has played in the progress of our nation and how the governor’s own faith would inform his presidency if he were elected.”

Mr. Romney personally made the decision to give the speech last week, feeling it was the right moment to do so, his advisers said. After he decided he would make it, the campaign consulted with former President Bush’s library, which invited him to deliver it there.

Suspicions about his Mormon beliefs, which many conservative Christians consider to be heretical, have dogged Mr. Romney’s candidacy since it began, with many polls showing large numbers of Americans would not vote for a Mormon presidential candidate.

Mr. Romney had resisted delivering a speech dedicated to his faith up to this point, choosing instead to address questions about his beliefs when they came up from audience members and reporters.

But many, including evangelical supporters, have long urged him to address the questions head on and deliver an address modeled after the one John F. Kennedy delivered about his Catholicism to a gathering of Southern Baptist ministers in Houston in 1960 that many credit with defusing questions about his faith.

If Mr. Romney’s responses to questions about his faith on the stump
are taken as a guide, it is unlikely that he will dwell much, if at all, on
the specifics of what he believes but instead talk about the fact the
Constitution bars any religious test for higher office.

I question his faith in his convictions simply because he changes them every few months.

Is this because of Huck running as a “Christian Leader” in his Ads?

Why don’t our guys make major speeches billed as as Wartime leaders?

Good grief. Our men in Afghanistan and Iraq must be saying; “what the heck??”.

Funny how Butt-rack Hussein’s islamic upbringing was a mainstream issue for about 5 minutes, but Romney is being hounded to no end on his religious beliefs. Islam is a skiffy gutter cult that doesn’t even qualify as a religion by any reasonable standard (and there being 1.5 billion of them doesn’t add an ounce of credibility). I’m not a mormon, either, but I’ll take it over islam any day of the week. Islam makes the moonies and hari krishnas look respectable.

Both the Huckster and Mitt on my "Only vote for if I have to list". That having been said, the Huckster is at the bottom of that list for using Christianity as a foil.

Is this because of Huck running as a “Christian Leader” in his Ads?

From the article: The timing of his decision cannot be ignored. It comes only a week after Mike Huckabee, a former Baptist pastor who a new Des Moines Register poll shows has now passed Mr. Romney for the lead among likely caucus-goers in Iowa, began airing a television ad that highlighted his identity as a “Christian leader.” Mr. Huckabee’s rise in the polls has been fueled by evangelical Christians.

Yawn... Anyone interested in learning about the Mormon faith has already done so, i.e. http://www.mormon.org.

I’m sure most people are far more interested in Romney’s stand on the issues of the day.

Vegas prefers to hire Mormons in the money counting rooms. Apparently, they are regarded as scrupulously honest.

I read that on a golden tablet I found outside the 4-Queens. Trust me.

Why does he even bother if he doesn’t plan to talk about his religion?

After he explains his Mormonism, he can explain something really important to me. How can anyone claim to be a Conservative of any significance and still get elected in Taxachussetts?

Because Romney raises the issue about five times a day, as part of his campaign technique. In contrast, Obama has brushed his connection with Islam under the rug and tried to ignore it.

I certainly agree with you that Islam is a far, far more serious problem than Mormonism could possibly be. There was some violence in the early days, but it would be hard to say that that was an essential part of Mormonism itself. In contrast, Islam is inherently violent, and always has been, from the example of Muhammed himself.

Or NYC? They are both lame jokes.

Oh sorry, should have read the article first.

Any idea what the % of the Iowa population votes in these caucuses?

Is there a huge evangelical voting block?

Thanks!

Mr. Romney personally made the decision to give the speech last week, feeling it was the right moment to do so,

If Mitt REALLY wants to "address" his faith, he will start out with this, the mormon creed:

The Articles of Faith
of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints

  1. We believe in God, the Eternal Father, and in His Son, Jesus Christ, and in the Holy Ghost.
  2. We believe that men will be punished for their own sins, and not for Adam's transgression.
  3. We believe that through the Atonement of Christ, all mankind may be saved, by obedience to the laws and ordinances of the Gospel.
  4. We believe that the first principles and ordinances of the Gospel are: first, Faith in the Lord Jesus Christ; second, Repentance; third, Baptism by immersion for the remission of sins; fourth, Laying on of hands for the gift of the Holy Ghost.
  5. We believe that a man must be called of God, by prophecy, and by the laying on of hands by those who are in authority, to preach the Gospel and administer in the ordinances thereof.
  6. We believe in the same organization that existed in the Primitive Church, namely, apostles, prophets, pastors, teachers, evangelists, and so forth.
  7. We believe in the gift of tongues, prophecy, revelation, visions, healing, interpretation of tongues, and so forth.
  8. We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.
  9. We believe all that God has revealed, all that He does now reveal, and we believe that He will yet reveal many great and important things pertaining to the Kingdom of God.
  10. We believe in the literal gathering of Israel and in the restoration of the Ten Tribes; that Zion (the New Jerusalem) will be built upon the American continent; that Christ will reign personally upon the earth; and, that the earth will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory.
  11. We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may.
  12. We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honoring, and sustaining the law.
  13. We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; indeed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul—We believe all things, we hope all things, we have endured many things, and hope to be able to endure all things. If there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Joseph Smith
