Missouri State University has reversed a decision to take down a 20-foot Christmas tree and will instead reinstall it along with symbols from other religions, the university said today.

The tree had been removed from Strong Hall on the university’s campus on Monday, after a Jewish faculty member complained that it showed a “lack of sensitivity” to other religions.

But the tree will be reinstalled along with symbols from other religions...

“We decided this is the right thing to do, and I am glad there was widespread agreement about it,” Missouri State President Michael Nietzel said in a statement.

The artificial tree was taken down Monday after Lorene Stone, dean of the College of Humanities and Public Affairs, was told about the faculty member’s complaint by the co-chair of the president’s diversity commission.

Courts have ruled that Christmas trees are secular symbols if they do not bear religious decorations, such as a cross,

And I hope that faculty member will be forced to walk past it every day until the end of finals.

Taking down a “lack of sensitivity” tree demonstrates a lack of sensitivity towards those who celebrate Christmas.

Interesting thing,,today LSU said it would call its tree the Holiday Tree rather than the Christmas tree.

The decision was rescinded before sundown. Hah!!

The person to be interested in is not the complainer but the head of the college who acted like a weenie and took down the tree. That is the weakest link.

I've noticed Christmas music in stores already too - talked with a couple managers - congratulated them...I think people have have "enough a'ready" of the "offended ones."

We need to let every store that plays Christmas music know that we support it = and that WE are offended if it ISN"T played...

If we do this vigorously, we can turn the tide...

It’s pretty simple, really, in a free society. Grant me the right to display my holiday symbols, and I’ll grant you the right to display yours. There, wasn’t that easy? So, deal with it. It’s not the end of the world.

As Christians, my family and I have done some inner city missions work, and through that I discovered years ago that a lot of Jewish people serve in such missions on Christmas Day. It’s a Mitzvah for them to do this.

I doubt the person who complained about the tree was one of them.

Let me get this straight.

They will put up the tree as long as it has no religious symbols on it.

It will be surrounded by other objects that have symbols of other religions on them.

Sounds fair. Sounds verrry sensitive.

Again, one person is unhappy so hundreds of people should be MADE unhappy.

Let's all just be unhappy together.

What a load of drivel.

But the tree will be reinstalled along with symbols from other religions...

The Christmas tree is not a symbol of Christianity.

What do you want to bet that it will have symbols from other religions but will lack any symbols from Christianity at all?

No shit!!! I graduated from that good institution (SMS). Somehow, someway, we would have found out who the perpetrator was and scolded the SOB publically on university grounds.

I haven’t visited the alma mater in a few years, but it now looks like I’ll have to do so. Good, solid post. :)
