Following a debate where GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson gave a lackluster performance, the former Tennessee senator is challenging his opponents to meet him for a more personal follow-up on his terms.
Thompson told FOX News moments after the Republican debate in St. Petersburg, Fla., ended Wednesday night that he next wants to challenge select opponents in a low-key, small-group setting.
"I would like for each of us in small groups ... to sit in small groups and have a discussion, a round-table discussion," Thompson said. "Anybody who's a serious contender for the nomination I would get to decide as to who I'd get to sit down with, and it'd be several. And I'd do it one-on-one, one-on-three or whatever."
Thompson's comments came after a debate where Republican candidates fielded video questions submitted by viewers on topics ranging from gun control to illegal immigration to the Confederate flag. Some candidates complained afterward of the derisive tone to some of the video submissions.

Not a bad idea... with or without TV cameras, though?
“Following a debate where GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson gave a lackluster performance”
I watched the debate and his performance WAS NOT lackluster. Who wrote this tripe.
I think this makes great sense.....three minute sound bites don’t give me much to sink my teeth into.
I missed the debates...need some follow up please!
“Following a debate where GOP presidential candidate Fred Thompson gave a lackluster performance”
How About:
“Following a debate where CNN openly planted Democrats and thier questions....”
A nice way to try and elevate yourself. I’m not sure those with higher poll ratings want to help him do that though but it’s always worth a try.
I answered my own question....this was at the bottom of the article: “FOX News’ Carl Cameron contributed to this report.”
Now I understand
Someone on Hillary's payroll, if past is prologue.
Surely Rudy and Mitt will jump at the opportunity!????
Fox News.
Fair, Rudolph Giuliani & Balanced.
The Anybody But Thompson Network... aka Foxnews...
Thompson made a mistake not accepting Huckabees challenge to a Lincoln Douglas debate the day after his entry into the race. Everybody laughed at me (and Huckabee) for saying it was a brilliant move by Huckabee and one that Thompson should consider. How does it look in hindsight? I think Thompson would have got free airtime and a lot of interested viewers and he and Huckabee would have basically frozen out Guilianni and Romney without doing each other damage.
I like this idea. Last night’s debate was a farce.
And just this morning on Fox and Friends there was a guy on there who said Fred Thompson was the best at the debate! lol
I was thinking the same thing. I think those that say things like this are feeling a bit of non control. Fred hasnt been willing to step by their agendas and that frustrates the hell out of them. Instead of seeing this as an asset they are threatened by it.
I think its a great idea and would allow us the normal citizens to be better educated of their stands on issues rather than listening to the so called objective reporters and too many doses of sound bite politics.
Not lackluster at all. He gave the best presentation up there to being the next President of The United States of America! Just goes to show you FOX news is still spouting the same anti-Fred Thompson garbage Fred called them out on when he was interviewed by that weasel Chris Wallace last Sunday.
Darn, does Carl Cameron have his wife do the editing on these stories? This story looks about as biased as Hillary’s plant last night.
Utterly ridiculous. Fox has gone too far now. Pundits making their comments is one thing but this is entirely beyond the pale.
Very bad.
Carl Cameron is a liberal hack. I always wondered why Fox news employed this idiot!
