As violence eases, Sarkozy vows justice for wounded police
The International Herald Tribune ^ | November 28, 2007 | Elaine Sciolino

President Nicolas Sarkozy made a lightning strike into France's troubled suburbs Wednesday, visiting a wounded police captain and pledging afterward in front of the trailing television cameras to bring attacking rioters to justice.

At 7:30 a.m., just hours after returning home from China, Sarkozy was at a hospital in the suburb of Eaubonne, north of Paris, lending his support to the police officer, who had been injured during clashes with rioters that started late Sunday.

"So that things are very clear: what has happened is absolutely unacceptable," Sarkozy said outside the hospital. He added that those who fired the shots would find themselves in court.

After two nights of rioting Sunday and Monday night, largely in the north Paris suburb of Villiers-le-Bel, the situation eased Tuesday night following the massive deployment of 1,000 anti-riot police there.

Sarkozy described the event that sparked the violence — the death of two teenage boys whose motorbike collided with a police car in Villiers-le-Bel — as "not something that we can tolerate." But he criticized those who seized on the incident to seek vengeance through violence.

"There's no link between what happened with these perfectly innocent two young boys and shooting at public officials," Sarkozy said.

Sarkozy made no other stop in the suburbs and did not linger in Eaubonne, but his brief visit was symbolically important.

His performance as a zero-tolerance, law-and-order interior minister for former President Jacques Chirac was much criticized by residents of France's working- and lower-class suburbs, and during his presidential campaign he stayed away from the tough neighborhoods in the suburbs that were consumed by three weeks of violence in late 2005.

Tonight’s 8 o’clock TV news from Paris showed that rioting had subsided since Sarko returned from China and made an appearance laying down the law.

Sarko stated that the attacks on the 83 wounded policemen will be punished for what they are...attempted murder.

Although the looting, pillaging and setting cars on fire is familiar, the new element in these riots was the presence of guns.

Most French people outside of the largest cities are hunters, and almost any adult in France can get a license for a gun. The “yoots” have changed into even more violent mode, and have started armed attacks against police.

Thank God Sarko is President. Can you imagine Segolene Royal standing there promising to bring to trial and convict these thugs for attempted murder?

She’s probably try and have the policemen brought to trial.

Sarkozy has muffed this test. Hauling a few perps into court only gives the French Jihad a little more class and a forum for theater and propaganda. He should have sent an army unit in with tanks as soon as there was shooting. There should be some dead rioters in the street. A few such bodies on the street will go far to prevent far more dead outside the banlieus and dead police.

Actually I think Sarkozy has responded appropriately. If it continues, France may very well see what you suggest. now

Those who fired the shots had towels wrapped around their heads and disappeared into a crowd of seething Muslims. How are they going to find themselves in court?

They simply are going to have to answer lead with lead, on a realtime basis, until the problem stops.

I wonder what the French think about the death penalty this morning.

Well until the shooting stops at least. But then they are going to have to start doing some regular police work in those muslim inhabited warrens. This is what happens when a city government just cedes control a section of the city because the police don't want to go there.

Does anyone know if the French or French law have any kind of written “rules of engagement” for the French police to defend themselves if under attack?

Are there any real laws or regulations that proscribe what they may do to defend themselves?

When may they return fire or shoot to kill?

Or have the leftists removed all reasons or abilities for the police to defend themselves?

The real solution is to deport all members of the death cult.

There has been a revolution in western culture over the last fifty years. Older people with any sense can see it clear as day. I am seventy years old and I’ve seen the shocking changes.

Fifty years ago, if you were willing to destroy or steal people’s private property, the police after one warning could shoot you dead during the act, and also shoot you if you attempted to flee. At that time, if you even pointed a weapon at a law officer, you could be dead, no questions asked. We had much more law and order then and a much more stable society.

Now Political Correctness PC will be the death of innocent people and the destruction of their private property, while the criminals are coddled. No man should be allowed to take the hard earned property of another or threaten to take the lives of citizens or lawmen without taking the ultimate risk himself. To allow that to happen brings chaos, which is what we have seen in Paris in recent years. The PC leftist conman philosophy is now the Achilles heel of Western Civilization. Let’s pray that we can remove it before it is too late.

I pray for Sarko and any leader that is trying to restore democracy, law and order to their Country.

Unfortunately, men and women with money and political ambitions always don’t have the Country’s best interest at heart. They fuel the fire and feed the enemy.

I am sure Msse. Royal is doing all she can to assist Sarko in resolving the chaos/sarcasm on

This is mystifying... two Moslem idiots smashed themselves into a police car... by calling it something not to be tolerated, I hope Sarkozy is planning to ban all scooter ownership by Moslems.
