HAGERSTOWN, Md. -- A Franklin County couple has been charged after leaving a young child in a car while they shopped.

Police said 20-year-old Laura Havens and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Casey Shields, left Havens' 2-year-old boy in a locked car while they shopped at the Prime Outlets in Hagerstown, Md.

The car was not running and police said the toddler was crying when they found him.

Investigators found the boy around 2:45 a.m. Friday. Police said there was no heat in the car and estimated it to be about 36 degrees at the time.

Jason Litten from the Washington County Sheriff's office said, "The child was found just wearing a T-shirt, blue jeans and no shoes, soaking wet. It was quite cold in the vehicle. He was shivering and quite scared."

The child was taken to Washington County Hospital for observation and released to a family member of the boyfriend.

Police said the mother gave no remorse for leaving the boy in the car and said she left him there because he was asleep.

She is charged with confining an unattended child. The boyfriend faces that charge along with possession of marijuana.

On top of not understanding those crazies that storm the stores on Black Friday like a bunch of psychos, I don't understand putting your child in danger to do so.

Sick.

People that leave children in broiling hot cars to die often escape punishment*.

* Well, I suppose the death of the child is punishment enough. /s

I know it doesn't make sense. The boyfriend isn't the father of the baby:

Police said 20-year-old Laura Havens and her boyfriend, 22-year-old Casey Shields, left Havens' 2-year-old boy in a locked car while they shopped at the Prime Outlets in Hagerstown, Md.

Anyway this goes it's the child that suffers for having an irresponsible mother with messed up priorities. An all too common story heard every day.

The liberaltarians can use them as poster parents to complain about JBSTs.

At the risk of sounding like a low-life, I’d love to punch her in the face. How’s that for Christian?

I am confused; if you leave a child (or a dog) in a car in the heat you face far more serious charges than this couple is facing. Why is it different if it is cold? I realize 36 degrees is not freezing, but if the child was wet- then with that temperature there is the chance of the child suffering from exposure. Not that it would be right in any weather- the child is only 2, and should not be left alone anywhere much less a vehicle. This couple are not parents, by any stretch- and should not be responsible.

I wonder how long before these stores with these early morning sales are sued for wrecks from people falling asleep in the car. (I know, kind of off topic from scumbags leaving their tot in the car alone) I do NOT think they will be liable, there are 24 hour stores open, but I honestly feel it is something that will happen. They keep getting earlier and earlier.

Sorry, that last sentence didn’t make sense- let me try again-

The parents have proved they are not responsible enough to have children- so the child needs to be taken away.
