Republican presidential hopeful Fred Thompson brushed off concerns Thursday about his single-digit showings in recent Iowa and New Hampshire polls, saying he expects a new television ad on immigration will help boost his numbers.
"In the past, a lot of things have changed in the Iowa presidential elections Howard Dean can tell you that," he said, referring to 2004 when Dean's third-place showing in Iowa derailed his campaign for the Democratic nomination.
"So you've just got to do what you do and keep at it and understand that the end of the day is all that counts," he said.
CBS/New York Times polls in Iowa and New Hampshire show Thompson at 9 and 5 percent for Republicans, respectively. Mitt Romney leads both states with 34 percent in New Hampshire and 27 percent in Iowa.
Thompson, who was in New York for a fundraiser and a closed town-hall meeting, said he expects his recently released television ad in Iowa to help sway voters in that crucial state. The ad stresses the need to secure U.S. borders and enforce immigration laws.
Illegal immigration has divided Republicans and remains a critical issue to many GOP voters. This past summer, Arizona Sen. John McCain supported legislation that would have strengthened border security and allowed for many illegal immigrants to become citizens. The leading GOP contenders, Romney and Rudy Giuliani, both opposed the legislation, which was backed by President Bush but failed in the Senate.
On Thursday, Thompson reiterated that the government should strip federal dollars from cities and states that don't report illegal immigrants, and he criticized Giuliani for "going to court to preserve sanctuary cities" while he was mayor of New York City.

Errr...plenty of Democrats aren't happy about the illegals either. Interesting that they paint this only as a GOP issue.
Fred is my man. The others cannot win. FDT will grow on the voters. He is a strong conservative who can defeat HER. He has taken conservative positions on immigration, entitlements, defense, and social issues. Go Fred!
Ditto, go Fred!
It has divided both major parties, and a majority within both parties favor enforcing current laws.

Duncan Hunter doesn’t even register in the California opinion polls. I think you’re trying to get the money back you gambled on him.
If I didn’t visit FR, I wouldn’t know who Duncan was...if you ask 70% of the population, they’d probably shrug.
Nope, I haven’t bet any money over there.
Name Recognition. Something that can be acquired.
Character. Something that matters more, much harder to acquire.

It took Reagan years to aquire his nomination. I’m not saying I wouldn’t vote for Duncan...I’m saying that Duncan needs to show SOME relevance in state polls to gain my support. I support Fred, but if Duncan shows well or wins in any early state, I will definitely reconsider.
I would hope Duncan supporters would do the same with Fred in early states. But that’s just my view.

Tell that to people that live in his county, we barely know who he is. That means that he just doesn’t have that intangible something that leads people to know who you are.
Not every politician that votes well, has the charisma to become a national star.
After 26 years he is retiring and turning over this safe, dull, conservative seat to his son.
That means that I will still look for the R with the name Hunter next to it when I vote, as I do every election here in his district.
By the way, you’re quoting the person I responded to. I didn’t say that particular quote...I quoted it.

Sorry Rick_Michael, that post # 14 was meant for Kevmo, I wasn’t paying attention and I left him off.
Duncan Hunter..... Thats a type of hunter usually seen when Dick Cheney starts turning towards them on a bird hunt. You know. Duncan Cover......
Fred Thompson will begin to grow on people and they will be convinced to not only vote for him but work for the Conservative revolution. Vote all the RINOS out and bring in new Conservative blood to shake the rafters in DC. I feel something in the air. Dont you?

***There’s that word again, Charisma. It only means something once you’ve chosen a candidate and then you claim he has it. A lot seems to have been poured into Thompson on the basis that he had it, but look what he did with it. Dropping like a rock in the polls, losing 30 points at Intrade. I’ll take the rock-ribbed conservative, thank you. He’s a better man, a better candidate and he would not have squandered the lead.

***Yawn. It’s mostly a democrat district.

***Somewhere in there is an argument but you make it worthless to translate it into something we could actually glean some wisdom from. If I had told you that when Thompson was in the lead at Intrade at 35% that he lose ~30 points, would you have said that’s a legitimate time to be asking him to step aside? I’ll take a candidate who is slowly climbing in the polls 8 weeks before the primaries to one who is rapidly losing poll support any day. Remember the promise that surrounded Fred several weeks ago and how he was supposed to be dispatching tootyfruityrudy by now?

So my 26 year knowledge of him and the fact that I actually vote for him and know the people here means nothing, I was trying to give you some insight on why he is not getting the recognition that you think he should nationally.
I don’t know where you get the idea that this is a democrat district.
Roll Call http://www.rollcall.com/electionmap/CA.html
52nd district
Open seat: Duncan Hunter (R) is running for president
14th term (65 percent)
Outlook: Safe Republican
“Democrats might make a play for the seat now that its open, but the Republican nominee whoever it is is still likely to be the heavy favorite.”
