NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE SHAKES UP RACE FOR REPUBLICAN PRESIDENTIAL NOMINATION:

Nation’s largest pro-life group endorses Fred Thompson WASHINGTON – Marking the first major endorsement by a national grassroots organization in the Republican presidential contest, National Right to Life, the nation’s largest pro-life organization representing pro-lifers in fifty state affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, today announced its endorsement of former Senator Fred Thompson for President of the United States.

“As the first major grassroots organization to enter the Republican presidential race, National Right to Life is proud to endorse Fred Thompson,” stated Wanda Franz, Ph.D., president of National Right to Life. “Our endorsement is a testament to Senator Thompson’s long-standing pro-life record, his commitment to unborn children, and our belief in his ability to win.”

In making its endorsement, National Right to Life considered the position of candidates on the life issues, their records on the life issues and their ability to win.

Fred Thompson has had a strong, consistent pro-life record throughout his political career. Thompson opposes abortion and believes the 1973 abortion on demand Supreme Court decision was wrongly decided and must be reversed. During his eight years in the United States Senate, he always opposed using tax dollars to promote or pay for abortion and supported the many pro-life measures such as parental notice and consent.

Thompson has also stated his opposition to the kind of stem cell research that requires killing human embryos, while supporting the kind of stem cell research that harms no one and is the only kind producing cures.

Since announcing his candidacy in September, Fred Thompson has run second only to pro-abortion candidate Rudy Giuliani for the Republican nomination in the overwhelming majority of national polls. As pro-lifers throughout the nation begin to unite behind his candidacy, he will be well positioned to win the nomination and the presidency.

“Unlike endorsements by single individuals, this endorsement was made by representatives of statewide pro-life organizations across America which themselves are comprised of local community chapters and grassroots activists,” said Dr. Franz.

The National Right to Life Committee is the nation’s largest pro-life group with affiliates in all 50 states and over 3,000 local chapters nationwide. National Right to Life works through legislation and education to protect those threatened by abortion, infanticide, euthanasia and assisted suicide.

This is the second most important issue to me, only illegal immigration outweighs it. And Fred is on the correct side of both issues.

Grassroots —> Thompson

Paid-off officials —> Romney

Clinton Fatigue Syndrome —> Giuliani

Which one will win over the others? It’s very telling for the movement.

Very transparent indeed. The grassroots have spoken, and they say "Fred!".

Here’s a guy who said on Meet the Press that he was against a constitutional amendment banning abortion. Go figure!

“Hopefully Someday” [Kathryn Jean Lopez]

Pro-life leadership, according to the National Right to Life Committee:

Monday, he said he would not back a federal constitutional amendment criminalizing abortion — a plank of the Republican platform for more than one-quarter century, contending it was more realistic to appoint conservative judges to outlaw abortion or let the states decide whether the procedure should be legal.

“What I have concentrated on is a way to get to the same goal [to ban abortion] that’s achievable. We could not get to first base on an amendment when we controlled both houses and the presidency,” Thompson said.

“Now the question is, what do you do about that? Well, I think the answer is to get better judges and to appoint people to the Supreme Court and hopefully someday Roe vs. Wade will be overturned. That’s my goal. That’s my priority,” he said.

There is, of course, a level of practicality to what Thompson says. But there are also things that can be done — restrictions that can be supported, federally, and leadership a pro-life president can provide pre- and post-Roe. So far in this race, Thompson has not sounded like someone who is interested in providing that kind of leadership.

I wonder if the National Right to Life Committee endorsement of Thompson might help Rudy in a roundabout way: Pro-lifers listen to Thompson and respond, “If this is the best pro-lifer the GOP has to offer, why don’t I just vote for the pro-choice guy. He wants ‘better judges’ too.”

From Jim Geraghty's Campaign Spot at National Review: HERE

“The NRLC came under huge pressure today as this leaked out, so it will be interesting to see how this plays,” the Associate said. “The Romney and Huckabee people seem very annoyed with this. Romney did everything he could to get this endorsement, and it was a smart move on his part - he clearly made the decision to go for this in a big way…

Thompson did what he needed to do. But there were no last-minute meetings, nothing like that… My understanding is that they made their decision based on the record and the information the candidates submitted to the candidates. Fred confirmed for them he was who he said he was, and he was who they thought he is.”

On bad buzz surrounding the campaign lately: “ABC was hearing rumors that Thompson was getting out of the race next week. Nonsense, of course. We’re just trying to go about our business get some work done, and we’ll see what the impact of any news coming out tomorrow is.”

On the importance of Iowa: People made some assumptions before there was a real campaign, based on things like not participating in the Iowa straw poll. They took that to mean that we weren’t competing in Iowa, when it meant something else altogether – namely, that participating in the straw poll would have taken money and organization we didn’t have at that point. But we’re competing in Iowa. We just did a big ad buy there. It’s been running for just under a week, and we’ll see in a week, when it’s gotten some circulation, if it has any impact on the poll numbers.
