Wherever it's been tried, embracing driver's licenses for illegal aliens — as Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton and most of the Democratic presidential field did last week — has been political poison, including helping cost one Democratic governor his office.
Ever since the September 11 terrorist attacks, lawmakers who back licenses for illegal aliens have suffered, such as Gray Davis, the former California governor who was recalled in part because he signed such a bill. Those who have called for crackdowns are reaping the political rewards.
"It's a winner in a general election; I think it's an absolute winner in a Republican primary; and I think it's a winner even in many states in a Democratic primary," said Rico Oller, the former California state senator who sponsored the bill to repeal the driver's license law Mr. Davis signed.
The issue has come to the fore since New York Gov. Eliot Spitzer, a Democrat, announced in September that his state would begin to issue licenses to illegal aliens who could present a valid passport from their home country. At last week's Democratic debate, Mrs. Clinton fumbled on whether she supported her governor, but a day later her campaign announced she generally backs the plan.
"We broadly support what Spitzer is doing," said spokesman Phil Singer. "Obviously, there are details that still need to be worked out, but our sense is that in light of the Bush administration's failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform and deal with the immigration crisis, there are many states that are acting."
Her stance has won her support from those who say it's time to retake the initiative after years of setbacks.
"All the candidates are either avoiding the issue or only addressing it partially or jumping on the anti-immigrant bandwagon," said Chung-Wha Hong

I hope and pray that this will become the defining issue in 2008. The majority of Americans are on our side regardless of party. The issue has to be framed properly and the public educated about immigration issues.
Additionally, while American citizens are waiting for this to happen, they want ALL illegal aliens off welfare of any kind, out of our schools, out of our emergency rooms and hospitals, etc.
NO driver's licenses for illegal aliens... no voting rights either... next protest by these parasites, most Americans would like to see them picked up and deported.
Illegal aliens have NO rights in this country. Their anchor babies need to be defined as their dependents. ONLY Americans and legal immigrants offspring should be automatic Americans if they're born in the USA.
So, polititians better wise up real quick... or they will find themselves VERY disappointed on election day.

Well if you listened to Hillary’s reply she said that it was due to George Bush’s failure to pass comprehensive immigration reform in the congress. It was so easy in past years to blame every act of nature on Bush, so now they have the congress they make believe they are still running in the minority and evil George Bush is running things. The media is also claiming this, so rats have no responsibility either way.
Oh bull freakin shiat it is about driver safety. It is about Motor Voter, plain and simple. Repeal Motor Voter and see if the guv is still hot to trot about illegals getting licenses. Yeah, I thought so.
Listening to Hillary is your first mistake. Her statement can easily be refuted. Take a look at the votes in the Senate in 2006 and 2007 and you will see that the vast majority of Dems voted for the bill joined by a minority of Reps. Bush has provided some cover to the Dems on this issue, but he would have signed the bill if it had emerged from Congress. Bush was sticking a finger in the eye of the majority of his own party. The GOP position is where the vast majority of Americans stand on the issue.
I am saying HRC blames GWB for not passing it, claiming it would solve all the illegal problems. They ran last year claiming they would get things done, now they act like they are still the minority and have no power and need more votes to pass “Americas’s” agenda. They act like they never won and have no responsibility for their failures.
One way to cause trouble for democrats is ironically join Code Pink and challenge Democrats (as a liberal) on supporting Hillary for not being a true liberal. Too Cynical?? Well they do anything to win and it is working.

Nothing prevents illegal aliens from voting in American elections. Yet, Hillary Clinton thinks we should give driver's licenses to illegal aliens.

Spitzer’s plan is a plan to give backdoor voting to illegal aliens and even terrorists.
It is such a terrible idea any patriot should be shocked at it.
We have to hit home how wrong this is, and YET ... New York jumped on board only after Maryland started doing the same.
There is a Democrat agenda at work to destroy our immigration laws for the sake of their partisan gain. It must be stopped.

What the politicians don’t understand, the fabric of the USA stands on the rule of law. Legalize the illegals by a stroke of the pen and there will be a revolt they have never seen before.
