Hillary Clinton -- and the other Democrats running for president -- couldn't possibly have assumed that they would forever skate around the issue of illegal immigration. That notion came to an end in the most recent debate, when the New York senator badly slipped over a question about her state's controversial plan to issue driver's licenses to illegal aliens. Did she think no one would ask?
Democrats had better start dealing with this. Polls show a large majority of Americans, including Democrats, opposed to illegal immigration. They also find that most Americans favor some sort of amnesty for many illegals. Clinton apparently tried to finesse the two, while ignoring what's behind the numbers.
What many Democrats (and Republicans) don't "get" is that the support for amnesty is highly conditional. It rests on trust that any official pardon will be the last one. The "grand bargain" on immigration went down in flames last spring because no one believed the sales pitch -- that with the amnesty would come a stop to future illegal immigration.
When will people know that their politicians mean business? When they hear them say "no."
Many Democrats have a terrible time saying "no" to illegal immigrants who are otherwise good people. Trouble is, there will always be nice, hardworking folks who come here without papers. Americans want their politicians to draw lines that they'll defend.
President Bush peddled the grand bargain's amnesty as a recognition that many illegal aliens have been working in this country a long time. But when the bill came out, the cutoff date was set at just four months prior. Sen. Jim Webb, a Virginia Democrat, tried to insert some discipline into the amnesty deadline by requiring a five-year residency. He failed.(continued)

I call Bullsh*t! Does anyone believe that the MAJORITY in this country favors amnesty?!
Nope. Only a majority of liberal media journalists maybe... the ones that don’t live next door to the problem as I do (less than 25 feet, to be precise).
Since you mentioned it, no!
They still don’t get it. We want them gone and the employers thrown in jail.
The media sends a mixed message on this. They say people want enforcement, but they’re willing to give amnesty. I’m not sure you can have both at the same time. Enforcement doesn’t lead to amnesty...it just doesn’t.

Supporting amnesty because illegals have not invaded your neighborhood? Immigration should not displace Americans, immigrants should be allowed in only as fast as they can assimilate. Immigrants should be diverse and not from one country.

“The media sends a mixed message on this.”
That’s the problem with the media - they are not expected to send any messages, but to report the news without bias.
Pundits are more prevalent now-a-days it seems. Plain news doesn’t get ratings.
“Democrats had better start dealing with this.”
NO! NO! NO!
I don’t want them to decide to change! Not until AFTER the pubbies whoop their butts in the 2008 election. And the Republicans can win in a landslide with this issue of illegal aliens and all the attendant horrors it’s brought with it.

“...Our politicians think amnesty should be an entitlement and no one should have to earn citizenship.”
A very true statement, one I have made to anyone who wants to listen to me. However my sister, a leftist, liberal psychologist (a dangerous combination), immediately responded to me with “Why not? After all what did you do to earn citizenship? Just being born here does not count.”
I still don’t have a really good answer ... winning in the birthing lottery is just life. So why did I not select richer parents ...
They are serious. Serious about turning them all into voters. Dead serious.
When Hill says that she is not in favor of drivers licenses for illegals, she is totally honest. Because, after she is elected, they will all be legal, not illegal.
I hope your right. I live in Arlington, and I’ll be very surprised if Tejada and some of the other incumbents on the County Board that are very pro-illegal alien get the boot. I voted against him and the other incumbents, but in the blue People’s Republic of Arlington County, VA, where 98% of the choices are either different varieties of Dems or one Dem running with no opponent, I’m not holding my breath. If pro-illegal invaders Walter Tejada gets the boot out of office, that would make my day.
Most Americans don’t understand the issue, which is why the Rep nominee must educate the public and frame the issue. Legalizing the status of the 12 to 20 million here translates into tens of millions more coming into the country as part of our extended chain migration policies. And it just encourages even more to come illegally. We found that out after the 1986 amnesty.
And if those conditions are met, who gets amnesty?
