Imran Khan escapes from house arrest [Pakistan]

LAHORE: Former cricketer and leader of the Pakistan Tehrik Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has reportedly managed to escape from his house here on Sunday after he was put under house arrest in the wake of the imposition of Emergency.

"He was detained along with eight supporters at the house. The supporters are at home but he has slipped away," his close relative told a foreign news agency.

Khan was put under house arrest hours after President Pervez Musharraf tried to justify the imposition of Emergency in the country and was kept confined at his home in Lahore.

The former skipper of the Pakistan cricket team, which brought the World Cup to Pakistan in 1992, had launched a verbal diatribe on Saturday against Musharraf, soon after the imposition of Emergency.

Khan had demanded death penalty for Musharraf for "committing treason."

Calling on Pakistanis to resist Musharraf's move and not to recognise new Chief Justice Abdul Hameed Dogar, Khan had said: "I urge the people, lawyers, civil society to resist this move by Musharraf. I urge lawyers to boycott the court proceedings."

Even after being kept under house arrest, he told CNN that General Musharraf was squarely to blame for Pakistan's problems.

"He never said how is he through the Emergency going to do things that are any different. He was the absolute ruler, he had absolute control so what was the impediment in his way to fight militancy and terrorism," he said on early Sunday morning.

Imran Khan is notable for having come to Muslim fundamentalism relatively late in life only after living it up for years as a globe-trotting athlete/playboy.

When he got married and decided to go into politics he re-discovered the One True Faith and changed his wardrobe when he realized the constituency of his hometown was decidedly conservative.

I’m betting that, like the Iranian Ayatollahs, he takes regular vacations to the fleshpots of Dubai.

Gee, I'm so surprised by this. Who would have ever suspected a murdering Muslim could escape from house arrest. But I'm sure he'll lead a very quiet life and won't make any trouble. < /S>

Maybe the logic being used is as follows: Imran is against Mushy, Mushy is our (scoff scoff) a'lly,' thus Imran must be bad.

Sadly it is quite flawed. Imran may be a hypocrite (trying to look Muslim when he is only that by virtue of being born one ...there is a difference), but a murdering muslim is a joke. He might have murdered opponents during his days as a cricket star, but that is about it.

I can ask the question without knowing the answer.

Is the the start of a phony coup? Or in other words, democracy as practiced in the Pakistan of today.

How would the mullahs be fooled otherwise?

thick skin up

If wearing the Salwar Kameez & going to Mecca is Muslim fundamentalism, well guess what,Pervez Musharraf does that regularly as well!!Imran is probably the last outpost of sanity in Pakistan & is considered the most upright among it’s politicians.
