SAN FRANCISCO Days after the end of World War II, an American soldier entering the wreckage of Adolf Hitler's mountain stronghold found that fierce Allied bombing had left the "Eagle's Nest" in ruins.
Hitler was dead, and other soldiers had already looted the inside of his private residence, even stripping the leather from furniture. Nearly everything of value was gone except for the Fuhrer's globe.
"Literally, the place is all bombed out and here this globe is sitting there on the desk," said John Barsamian, now 91.
Now Barsamian is putting the artifact up for auction, along with all the military paperwork that allowed him to bring it back to the United States, including a certificate that reads "1 Global Map, German, Hitler's Eagle Nest."

oops! i forgot... war isnt politically correct.
$15-20,000? Doesn’t seem near enough.
I would think that adding a zero would be a better estimate.
Here's an earlier picture of Hitler with his globe in happier days.
Exactly!
If there is anyone who has never seen “The Great Dictator”, this scene alone is worth your time:

I wonder if he was part of “E”asy company of the 101st, 506th PIR???? If I remember my Band of Brothers well enough, they were the company that got there first to the Eagles Nest and safeguarded it and I think Hemler’s place. I remember seeing something about one of the members of Easy being suspected of making off with Hitler’s picture album and it was confirmed when the guy died in the 50’s and his family found it.
He must have been in the 101st to get there in April. But we were allowed to send back Nazi weapons. I got a rifle and a P-38.
Another favorite line: "Why are you Russian around? Quit Stalin!"
“Hemlers place”
You mean Himmler, but actually, it was Goering’s place.
‘Hemlers place
You mean Himmler, but actually, it was Goerings place.’
I thought Goering gave it to Hitler as a birthday present but that Hitler only actually went there two or three times. Probably never saw the globe much less used it.
“I thought Goering gave it to Hitler as a birthday present...”
I was referring to Goering’s estate down the hill from Hitler’s Eagle’s Nest.
Who’s on first?
I was as well. Couldn't remember whose estate it was. But it was supposed to have numerous priceless art works and a wine cellar to kill for.
When I was there in 1977, the ruins of Goering’s estate were still there as well as what was left of some SS barracks.
The trip up to Hitler’s lair is scary as hell. The winding road is so narrow that they have to time the buses coming up and down. There’s no room to negotiate on the road if two buses would meet head on. Eventually you arrive in a parking area and take this huge gold-domed elevator to the top.
A breath taking view when the clouds break.
