As long as you sing some version of the lyrics to “Louie, Louie” while consuming.

Good choice. Any lyric is as good as any other.

old-fashioned principles such as working hard and telling the truth,

(* cue Andy Rooney voice *)

Didja ever notice that liberal "truth tellers" only tell the truth about their political opposites.......and that they have no truths to spout when it comes to the crimes of their political soulmates?

Didja ever notice that their worship of 'free speech' comes to a screeching halt when their political opposites would like to say something........that there's always a valid reason like 'stopping hate' to support the suppression of said speech?

Didja ever notice they can't wait longer than one week for a military action to be successful........but they'll wait decades for a welfare action (i.e. War on Poverty) and support it regardless of how ineffective it is?

Yeah, he was a good writer in spite of his habits, not because of them. At least he was until his habits dragged him down.

Say what you will about the demented genius of Hunter S., but he will always have a place in my life, and was certainly an early influence on me. Part of my very twisted sense of humor (and not a small part of my twisted sense of reality) can be directly attributed to Hunter and his Songs of the Doomed...

You’ll need another fifty years before Hunter thomson can be truly appreciated.

Thompson said a lot of interesting (and crazy) things. But one observation of his I found particularly true and interesting:

"Freedom is something that dies unless it's used."

He started out as an iconoclast, with a great writing style, but in the end turned into a whiney old poltroon.

He killed himself because he had completely ruined his health and his popularity had fallen away. Like Hemmingway at the end, he could barely write a sentence that pleased him.

Let’s face it. This guy racked his brain with drugs and drink and hadn’t written anything halfway good for the last 30 years of his life. I suppose he wrote some clever stuff when younger but crazy old druggies have zero appeal

Not to mention the Left, which he had spent his life defending, turned on him. I think he was more of a libertarian. Drugs, cigarettes, politically incorrect speech, guns (oh, my did he love guns). He knew that he had fighting for the "wrong side" by the end of his life. He was obviously anti-Bush but he was really feeble in defending people like Clinton.
