He started out as an iconoclast, with a great writing style, but in the end turned into a whiney old poltroon.

He killed himself because he had completely ruined his health and his popularity had fallen away. Like Hemmingway at the end, he could barely write a sentence that pleased him.

Let’s face it. This guy racked his brain with drugs and drink and hadn’t written anything halfway good for the last 30 years of his life. I suppose he wrote some clever stuff when younger but crazy old druggies have zero appeal

Not to mention the Left, which he had spent his life defending, turned on him. I think he was more of a libertarian. Drugs, cigarettes, politically incorrect speech, guns (oh, my did he love guns). He knew that he had fighting for the "wrong side" by the end of his life. He was obviously anti-Bush but he was really feeble in defending people like Clinton.
