Desperate Housewives racial slur: Philippines wants apology

The Philippine government is to seek an apology from the producers of the hit US television series "Desperate Housewives" for a racial slur against Filipino medics, the Philippine Daily Inquirer said on its web site Wednesday.

The officials cited a recent episode where actress Teri Hatcher, who plays Susan Mayer, asked whether the person attending to her during a medical consultation "can I check those diplomas because I want to make sure that they're not from some med school in the Philippines."

Asked if the government would seek an apology from the producers of the show, and ABC television network that carries it, executive secretary Eduardo Ermita said: "Yes, I think we should, on behalf of our Filipino professionals."

"can I check those diplomas because I want to make sure that they're not from some med school in the Philippines."

Will someone please explain to me how that is a racial slur?

I wonder if the Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton have taken up residence there??????

I’m half Filipino and I’m not offended. If I were seeing a doctor I sure as heck wouldn’t want a doctor with a diploma from Jorge’s Med School and Nipa Hut in Mindanao............

Some people wake up every morning just looking for something to be offended about.

Here is what the response should be (but won’t):

To the Philippine Gov’t:

In response to your request for an apology for a statement you deemed politically incorrect, we wish to respond using the mathematical concept of compounding.

By that concept we make the following statement in response to your request for an apology.

“No and go fu*k yourself”

Thank you.

Is this show still on?

I read it the same way as someone saying, "I want to make sure he didn't take some overseas correspondence course."

All humor has to have a very sharp cutting edge. You can’t stop telling jokes because someone might be “offended”. You would end up with a very cold laugh-free world if you tried.

They should have said "I want to make sure it is not from some med school in a red state because those people are rednecks."

Would have been more in line with Hollywood values.

There’s a heck of a lot more offensive stuff on that garbage of a show, than some comment on Filipinos.

hey now. that’s not at all true, its just us white folk who can’t use any type of humor that discusses any other race/ culture. black people can still make all the black jokes they want, and hispanics can make the hispanic jokes, etc.

"I for one wouldnt want a doctor who got his diploma from the Philippines"

I have a doctor who came from the Philippines and she must have gotten her diploma from there also. :-)

Case in point. I had some symptoms that she took as a bladder infection. She wrote me out a Rx of (Sipro) and told me to take them and then go get a urine test to see if the infection was all cleared up. I didn't follow her instructions and went and got a urine test first to see if there was a bladder infection. There wasn't. I keep saying to myself I need to get another doctor

How about we just send them 43,912 carbon offset credits for their 21,881 offense debits, sell some December irritation puts, put on a ratio bear call spread with 3200 mad cow calls and 1600 bid flu calls?

I think we should just relax and not get offended by such mild comments. Ms. Hatcher probably just "flipped" out for a second.

I can agree that everyone should closely examine the training and abilities of his or her medical care professional. However, foreign universities are on balance turning out health care grads who have strong work ethics, make caring decisions, and are fairly well informed regarding the latest standards of care. I know of several physicians and nurses who were trained in the Philippines. Of those whose work is familiar to me they are above average to excellent in performance. Of course, not all foreign-trained physicians perform as well.

One thought you might have is to compare the foreign-trained with with US-trained health care professionals and there is where the light turns on US health care education. Many grads of US schools don’t perform as well as the facilities and opportunities for a good education would predict. This is especially true when evaluating nurses in my part of the US. Nurses trained in the Philippines are available and are well trained. Especially desirable is their cultural background which is more conservative and rooted in the Catholic tradition of caring and health. One problem is that, regardless of training, US-trained nurses are not as available. I am not trying to bash US trained nurses only suggesting that each individual must be evaluated separately.

My best ever doctor was trained at top universities in the Philippines and in New York, My second best doctor ever was trained in Madison WI, and my worst family doctor was trained at Stanford U. In my current community, good and bad doctors vary widely in place of origin.

Racial slur is the magic phrase. If you’re offended it’s a racial slur.

I just rewatched the scene (I DVR it because of Sunday Night Football). Yup, it’s there and I missed it the first time I watched it.

Probably “the Phillipines” was the wrong target. The scriptwriters would have been smarter to say “the Caribbean” or “Central America” to get the same meaning without identifying a particular country.

Oh well, DH are all libs so if somebody wants to call them out on using a “racial slur”, who are we conservatives to come to their defense?

Since the writers of Desperate Housewives is gay, can it really be a slur?

Don’t they have exempt status?

It's not if the writers are Gay Filipinos (that sounds like a name for a rock band). Otherwise, you'd to have ask a liberal, not me.

To be honest, one of the reasons I watch DH is because gays are allowed to be vicious in their commentaries about women where, if a straight man wrote it, it would be considered a "hate crime". They really nail these women when they are being shallow, manipulative or selfish (probably because they live it all too well). And with biting humor too.

I've had people ask why I'd watch something that mocks American suburbia and what I've realized is that DH is more a commentary on liberal "family values" than it is about suburbia. The show (intentionally or unintentionally) illustrates how liberalism leads to misery and destroyed lives. And you notice the hypocrisy too - like when Lynette discovers the neighborhood pedophile and unintentionally starts a lynch mob. She's full of regret that she ran the guy off but what was the alternative other than eventually he'd have his way with her three boys? And if homosexuality is so wonderful (according to libs), why is she worried about what this man might do to them?

I'm really a bit disappointed that Victor didn't turn more into a clone of Bill Clinton. That would have been a hoot but I guess they realized they couldn't chance it during a campaign season. I never understood what Gabby saw in him anyway. Now it looks like he's going to get written out and she'll return to Carlos.
