A student at the University of Memphis was fatally shot late Sunday on the campus of the school.

Authorities did not immediately release the victim's name, but said he was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead a short time later at the Regional Medical Center.

The man had apparently walked out of the dormitory where he lived and was in his car when the shooting occurred. The car ran into a tree a short distance from the campus.

The victim was a member of the university's football team, WMC-TV reported. The station also reported the dorms were locked down after the shooting took place.

There were no immediate arrests.

Classes for Monday were canceled, said university police.

Sad...Memphis is under seige from the gangs and other criminals, with a ego driven “God anointed me” mayor at the helm. Hopefully one of the two other dems running for the office will displace him and begin the process to reduce the crime level. BUT then it would take getting the state legislature to build MORE prisons...current serve rate is 33%, and another unit at the Shelby Co Penal Farm..which houses the 11 mo/29 day offenders...recidivisim from that institution is 85%! Until you put an end to the revolving door you won’t make a dent in the crime level.

He was living in a dormitory so he was attacked on campus. Was he trying to drive himself to the ER or was he trying to escape his attackers?

Car jacking gone bad? Do they have a lot of that in Memphis?

MEM hasn’t been the same since the 1968 riots after MLK’s assassination.

Just think what a different world America would be today if Mayor Henry Loeb had given the sanitation workers a raise in 1968...

This is my Alma Mater. A lot of the dorms aren't far from the edge of campus there. Fox news just gave a report which almost implicate race as a motive. Considering the crime rate in Memphis that is a bad assumption.

Sorry I put the wrong quote in the first post. One of the motivating factors for us to move out of Memphis is a failed car jacking while I was on the way to work. That and my husband was robbed twice in one month.

My nephew by marriage is attending Law School there right now.

This guy was his roomie.

They suspect a robbery since he had just won a few thousand in Tunica.

University of Memphis is a rough school surrounded by some serious hood.....

once it wasn’t so bad....shame.

Godspeed the dead boy.

I am very sorry for this young man’s death.

But, I have a serious problem with college athletes gambling.
Exactly how a certain NBA referee got into trouble betting on games he officiated.
