Sleeping too much, just like sleeping too little, could increase a person's risk of dying, a new U.K study indicates.
Researchers at the University of Warwick's Warwick Medical School studied 10,308 British civil servants in two different time periods: between 1985 and 1988, and between 1992 and 1993.
Study participants who slept longer than eight hours were more than twice as likely to die as those who kept sleeping for seven. Researchers believe depression, low socioeconomic status and cancer-related fatigue could play a part.
(CBC) With seven hours seen as the optimal amount of sleep for the average adult, the study subjects who cut the duration of their sleep from seven hours to five hours a night had a 1.7-fold increased risk of death from all causes, according to the research, presented Monday to the British Sleep Society.
They also had twice the increased risk of death from a cardiovascular problem.
More surprisingly, scientists found those individuals who increased the number of hours they slept per night from seven to eight hours or more were more than twice as likely to die as those who kept sleeping for seven. They were also more likely to die from non-cardiovascular diseases.
"Short sleep has been shown to be a risk factor for weight gain, hypertension and Type 2 diabetes sometimes leading to mortality,' said Francesco Cappuccio, an author of the study.
So they have a 200% chance of dying?

I guess so. “You Only Live Twice” was one of my favorite James Bond flicks.
How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?
A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man.

Thanks for the ping!
Interesting thought. If we’re all going to burn in a great ball of fire because of global warming, what difference would any of this make?
Well, it’s obvious that the time is now to call our legislators in DC to solve this problem!
If people aren’t willing to sleep for 7 hours then we need to pass legislation banning long nights and sleeping in on Saturday as well as increasing taxes on tobacco to pay for a program to educate people and provide tax incentives for purchasing pillows, comfy sheets, etc. We need this law to protect our children and low income minorities who don’t have access to sleep number beds and expensive digital alarm clocks!
This is so much bull!!
My family have all been 10-11 hours a night sleepers, going back generations.
My mother passed away from pneumonia (an alchoholic who had a 4-pack-a-day ciggie habit) at age 76, this after having beaten cancer to a stand still three times!
She died young, as everyone else was living well into their late 80s and early 90s.
Could it be that persons who are sick tend to sleep more than healthy persons?
Correlation is not causation.
People with lung cancer are more likely to be smokers, thus lung cancer cells make you smoke.
lol.
The State Division of Youth and Family Services should be called in to investigate any parents who put their kids down for a nap...it’s child abuse. I think.
We need more money to determine that.
People who are depressed take anti-depressants -—> depressed people are more likely to commit suicide ——> anti-depressants cause suicides.
If you torture the data enough it will tell you whatever you want to hear.
So Grandma was a victim of old age?
Hehehe.
Hmmm... I’ll have to sleep on this one.
Hmmm.
I’d like to get the chance to test this theory....however between our dogs, and the animal rescue stuff my wife is involved in (got a phone call related to that at 5 AM this morning....grrrrr) I doubt I’ll ever get around to it...(yawn).....
Every single person who has ever fallen asleep is going to die! (Someday)
