Study participants who slept longer than eight hours were more than twice as likely to die as those who kept sleeping for seven.

So they have a 200% chance of dying?

How long will you lie there, O sluggard?
When will you arise from your sleep?

A little sleep, a little slumber,
a little folding of the hands to rest,
and poverty will come upon you like a robber,
and want like an armed man.

Proverbs 6:9-11

did they study the dreaded DEATH BY GLOBAL WARMING

Well, it’s obvious that the time is now to call our legislators in DC to solve this problem!

If people aren’t willing to sleep for 7 hours then we need to pass legislation banning long nights and sleeping in on Saturday as well as increasing taxes on tobacco to pay for a program to educate people and provide tax incentives for purchasing pillows, comfy sheets, etc. We need this law to protect our children and low income minorities who don’t have access to sleep number beds and expensive digital alarm clocks!

This is so much bull!!

My family have all been 10-11 hours a night sleepers, going back generations.

My mother passed away from pneumonia (an alchoholic who had a 4-pack-a-day ciggie habit) at age 76, this after having beaten cancer to a stand still three times!

She died young, as everyone else was living well into their late 80s and early 90s.

More surprisingly, scientists found those individuals who increased the number of hours they slept per night from seven to eight hours or more were more than twice as likely to die as those who kept sleeping for seven. They were also more likely to die from non-cardiovascular diseases.

Could it be that persons who are sick tend to sleep more than healthy persons?

Correlation is not causation.

Cause and effect or effect and cause?

People with lung cancer are more likely to be smokers, thus lung cancer cells make you smoke.

Sleeping too much, just like sleeping too little, could increase a person's risk of dying....

You mean that if I get the right amount of sleep I won't die?

Seriously, dying earlier than expected due to too much sleep is not something that I'm too concerned about. When the kids leave the house, the computer, cable TV and the DVD stop working (permanently) and every book and magazine spontaneous disappears, along with the technology to make more - THEN I'll worry about it.

“the study subjects who cut the duration of their sleep from seven hours to five hours a night had a 1.7-fold increased risk of death from all causes”

Sooo... If one sleeps 5 hours instead of seven, has a 1.7 more chance of being killed by getting hit by a bus? I guess that makes sense because that person is active two more hours per day.

I find it funny that the article doesn’t say that those who sleep 9 hours instead of 6 hours have a 50% more chance to die in their sleep.

Above 100%? At least I won't die tired.

So, according to this, if you go to bed at 11:00pm and get up at 7:00, you’re risking your life?

Good grief.
