I was taken with the fact that Ahmadinejad is an engineer

I remember thinking, as an engineering student, that engineers could run the country better than the "political class." Nuclear engineer Jimmy Carter disabused me of that opinion for all time.

Great observation and conclusion.

A little trip down memory lane for me: A college political science professor of mine pointed out--with much chagrin--that a Nimitz class supercarrier was to be named after George H.W. Bush (CV-77) while Jimmy Carter had no such distinction, despite being such a competent and qualified nuclear engineer.

The man pronounced 'nuclear' as "nucular!" And he was qualified to do what exactly?

Jimmy Carter was never a nuclear engineer. He was tapped by Rickover to serve as a senior staff officer overseeing the nuclear submarine program, and took graduate level courses in nuclear technology to qualify himself for the position. I’m sure he was a serious student, and gained an informed technical perspective from these studies, but he was not studying to be a nuclear engineer, and he was not a nuclear engineer.
