US and Chinese officials recently met in Beijing for agricultural trade talks. However, the two parties failed to agree with issues regarding poultry trade.
China's zero-tolerance for salmonella in raw poultry was discussed in length. "How can you produce poultry without traces of salmonella? It's killed when you cook it," said USDA's Undersecretary for Farm and Foreign Agricultural Services Mark Keenum, who led the US delegation. As for China, "They simply reaffirmed their position," he stated.
On the other hand, Keenum said that the USDA is working to produce rules that would allow China to export cooked chicken products to the US. China approached the table with their own list of protests about US food products, with labelling problems, falsified certificates and poor quality among their complaints.
Vice minister of China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection, and Quarantine (AQSIQ), Wei Chuanzhong, will shortly be leading a delegation to Washington for bilateral talks on food safety with the USDA Under Secretary for Food Safety Richard Raymond.
In conclusion, Keenum hopes that the issues will be resolved before December's cabinet-level Joint Commission on Commerce and Trade meeting between the two nations.
Please put me on your ping list. Thanks in advance!
Personally, I’m going to stick with locally grown meats and poultry, as much as possible. California has a couple of brands of poultry which are produced in-state. They may not be organic, but at least they don’t taste stale from traveling for a week across the country.
Then how about asking that EVERYTHING China makes not be full of shit and lead?
This whole article is about how China is now creating policiy standards that are not reasonably attainable. (No trace of salmonella in raw poultry). They’re having a tantrum over our recent displeasure with their poisoning our people and pets. It is so like them to howl about lousy American quality when accused of lousy Chinese quality. I say let them export any damn thing they want. Then run a couple public service announcements warning of the dangers of poisoned food from China.
Can’t go wrong with the Tyson Chicken.
Ehhh... from my POV, I see two things wrong with Tyson chicken:
(1) It has to travel to California from all the way in Arkansas (I can taste the mileage on out-of-state chicken).
(2) I read somewhere that Tyson was a big contributor to Bill Clinton's campaign. Correct me if I'm wrong.
Those two things certainly make me averse to buying their chicken.
There are also Shelton and Huntsinger brands (and possibly others), but those are very expensive.
Then how about asking that EVERYTHING China makes not be full of shit and lead?”
I hear the chickens out of D.C. are full of shit and they all need more lead in their diet.
