Last One Out of Detroit, Turn off the Lights

Posted on 09/07/2007 9:40:05 AM PDT by KYGrandma

We have packed up our house and movedto Kentucky. Has anyone else been able to sell and get out? We lost about 30 grand but it is sold. We close on Monday. Guess I will have to change my tag line!

Years ago I knew a woman who grew up in Detroit. She told me that the family house was worth less than it had been when her parents bought it. I laughed, because I didn't think that was possible. I asked her what it was worth. She said, "$35,000" and I laughed again, because I didn't think it was possible.

But I have since learned that Detroit is a special place where all things are possible.

Same situation as you. We plan on moving to South Carolina by January and we'll make very little on our house or, more than likely, break even. We are not in Detroit, but I work there and can't wait to get out of this area. For me, I just cannot take another Michigan winter.

I'll miss the Red Wing games tough, wonder if there is some way to pick up FoxSports Detroit through my cable operator down there.

Detroit just keeps losing people and shedding jobs. Governor Granholm and Mayor Kilpatrick think that's cool.

Detroit is the only city in the country where your family inheritance isn't enough to even make a down payment on a new home elsewhere. It sucks to live there.

I live in a state where a two family in the ghetto of Newark (the east coast's answer to Detroit) will set you back $350,000.

I never knew places existed where you could buy a house for under $100,000, but Detroit is indeed a special place.

You could buy a nice car for that money. Why any one would want to buy depreciating real estate in Detroit is beyond me... the equity will never provide old age retirement income.

There seems to be a common thread: Any major city that has been run by democrats for a long time keeps getting worse and worse places to live.

So you got to ask yourself (voters) - why keep voting for the same and expecting improvements?

Courtesy of another freeper,

A Japanese doctor says, “Medicine in my country is so advanced that we can take a kidney out of one man, put it in another, and have him out looking for work in six weeks.”

A German doctor says, “That is nothing. We can take a lung out of one person, put it in another, and have him out looking for work in four weeks.”

A British doctor says, “In my country medicine is so advanced that we can take half a heart out of one person, put it in another, and have both of them out looking for work in two weeks.”

The Canadian doctor, not to be outdone, interjected, “You guys are way behind. We took a woman with no brains, sent her to Michigan where she became Governor, and now half the state is out looking for work.”

Remember Newark and Detroit are above sea level, so that got that going for them!

I left Detroit in 1994 to take a job in Indianapolis.
There are times when I miss Michigan, as Indiana cannot compete for lakes, fishing, snowmobiling, waterskiing, etc.

But Indy is a much better city and the downtown atmosphere is much nicer. Still has bad parts, but that’s all that appears left of Detroit - bad parts.

My main man from high school in Detroit lost his mother earlier this year. She had lived in the house that she and her husband had built in 1938. It was in a fairly nice 'hood, but deteriorated significantly over the years. For the last decade, she was the only European-American for miles, and her neighbors circled the wagons around her every night for her protection.

My buddy and his brother wound up the property last spring and were able to get out of it almost as much money as their parents had originally paid. The 'hood was around Southfield and Schoolcraft. My family and I lived about ten blocks further east. I got out in 1960 when I enlisted and my parents retired to Florida in 1964.

Detroit is nothing more than kindling wood, though.
