The Birth of al Qaedastan

In the year 2016, the world may find itself gloomily marking September 6 as the tenth anniversary of the creation of the Islamic Emirate of Waziristan. The Emirate received de facto recognition when the Taliban used the name on the ceasefire agreement they signed with Pakistan on that day in 2006. If things go terribly wrong in the coming decade, they could come to rule a mountainous fragment of Pakistan and Afghanistan.

The Emirate would be a nightmare state: Osama bin Laden as sultan, Ayman al Zawahiri as vizier, and Mullah Omar the spiritual leader. An economy built on smuggling and heroin. Primary export: terrorism. Welcome to ‘Al Qaedastan’.

Analysts say the rise of a terrorist state straddling the rugged area between Pakistan and Afghanistan is now viable. The reason is a number of troubling trends. One, the revival of a Taliban firmly in the control of Al Qaeda. Two, the seeming inability of either Kabul or Islamabad to defeat the new threat militarily. Location of Wednesday PHS Bomb Threat Call Released

The location of the latest bomb threat called in Wednesday morning to Parkersburg High School has been released.

Parkersburg High School Principal Ralph Board and Parkersburg Police Chief Gerald Board both tell WTAP-TV that Wednesday morning’s bomb threat call came from a pay phone at the Go Mart Convenience Store at the corner of 16th Street and St. Marys Avenue in Parkersburg.

That’s less than a half mile from the high school. (snip)

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “OCALA - Four police officers are under investigation here after a man accused them of using a Taser on him three times when he wouldn’t take his hand off a Koran hidden under his shirt, a police spokesman said Friday.

Jeffrey Shields, 49, of Ocala, filed a complaint with the Ocala Police Department alleging an officer used a Taser to force him to hold up his right hand, police spokesman Lou Biondi said.”

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Officers were dispatched to the scene on Aug. 31 after authorities received tips that a man matching Shields’ description was armed with a gun and stashing drugs inside a book, Biondi said. Neither drugs nor a gun was found after the incident.”

US Video Shows Hacker Hit on Power Grid

WASHINGTON — A government video shows the potential destruction caused by hackers seizing control of a crucial part of the U.S. electrical grid: an industrial turbine spinning wildly out of control until it becomes a smoking hulk and power shuts down.

The video, produced for the Homeland Security Department and obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday, was marked “Official Use Only.” It shows commands quietly triggered by simulated hackers having such a violent reaction that the enormous turbine shudders as pieces fly apart and it belches black-and-white smoke.
