Self ^ | Self

Posted on 08/29/2007 7:15:58 PM PDT by Sparky1776

USS Constitution under sail last week in Boston Harbor, Aug 24, 2007. (As viewed from Spectacle Island).

Her final sail for the season is this Friday.

"USS Constitution will be sailing under her own power into Boston Harbor (Aug 31st). She will take a cruise out to Deer Island and on the return trip will do a 21-gun salute when she passes Castle Island in South Boston. USS Constitution will leave port at 10am and should return around 1pm." (Constitution Website)

This is her last sail for this season, then not again until the summer of 2010 due to maintenance demands, she will however be open to the public for regular tours at the Charlestown Shipyard

I just posted a couple of links for video I shot last week.
There are a couple of more of Constitution and I hope to have a couple of videos of the Liberty ship SS John W Brown which was visiting Boston last week, up later tonight at YouTube.

Thanks for the ping. She’s an awesome ship; will you observe the 21-gun salute on the 31st?

As a descendant of her first commander, Isaac Hull, I can’t thank you enough for that beautiful shot!

I went aboard in Boston in 1970. Very dark and dense, coal becoming a diamond. Worth all the maintenance required to last forever.

Hi Dysart, Not this Friday - got to work but I do try to make it twice a year, on July 4th and for one of the other various turn -arounds (usually 3- 4 per year).

Dysart? As in Fife, Scotland?

Magnificent! Absolutely breathtaking. One of the things I have to do before I die is set eyes on that ship. Even if it means going to Massachusetts.

Do it. Walk the Freedom Trail. Pop over to Lexington and Concord. It will give you chills.

I googled and posted the best pic. I would love to see her sail through
the Chesapeake bay one day. She is beautiful in every way.

Realizing the history of that ship, it brings tears to one’s eyes. Which brings to mind, locate her in a safe place ringed with well-trained special-ops types to safeguard her against Islamic barbarians. Not kidding.

And if Ranger Dave is on duty in the Concord welcome center, make sure to catch his intro to the short multimedia presentation. Even if you’ve seen the show, listen to the Ranger talk from the heart.
