U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) today announced that she will introduce a resolution to abolish the Electoral College and provide for the direct popular vote of the President. Senator Feinstein's announcement comes against the backdrop of a bid in California to qualify a ballot initiative that would skew the outcome of Presidential elections.
"This proposed California initiative is very dangerous it is an attempt to tinker with state law in order to influence the outcome of national Presidential elections," Senator Feinstein said.
"There is no question that our system of electing a President is outmoded, but this initiative is not the way to do it. I believe that the Electoral College must be abolished, and that the President be elected through direct popular election."
"Under the current system, it is possible for a Presidential candidate to lose the popular vote, but to be elected by the Electoral College. This has happened four times in the nation's history, most recently in 2000."
"And the current system enables a handful of states to become battleground states, and disenfranchises tens of millions of American voters in the most important election in the nation. By amending the Constitution to abolish the Electoral College, and replacing it with a system in which the winner is the candidate with the most votes nationwide, we will ensure that the method of electing the President and Vice President is fair and uniform."
Currently, California gives all of its 55 electoral votes to the candidate winning the popular vote statewide. This method is used by almost all the states. Under the initiative drive being circulated in California, the state would give Presidential candidates one electoral vote for every Congressional district that they win, plus two electoral votes for whichever candidate gets the most votes in the state.

When I hear the word Feinstein the only word that I can think of is a$$hole. With her goofy idea Goofy Gore would have been President........ We don’t need more like her......
Let’s see. In the 230 year history of this country the number of times that the popular vote winner hasn’t also won the electoral college is -—— 3. 1876, 1888, and 2000. So, since it has happened exactly once in the last 120 years, we should change the law. Good thinking DiFi.
It’s easy to understand why Feinstein opposes the ballot initiative: some conservative districts could give the GOP nominee some electoral votes. California would cease to be an all-Democrat electoral block.
Also, in 2004, Bush won the popular vote, so her precious Constitutional amendment could backfire given a good Republican presidential campaign.
I once read that she was one of the most dangerous people in America. Hmm. She’s not too bright but...
If I remember correctly, The People's Dunce-Cap Republik of Maryland's law doesn't actually go into effect until like initiatives are enacted by enough other states to get the affected electoral vote count to (or maybe it's over) 270.
And guess which constituency is heavily armed. :-)
Oh, and I didn’t know I was as old as this picture makes me look!
She looks horrible in the pic!
The Electoral College is a natural containement for vote fraud. California's 55 electoral votes always go to the Democrat, but the 6 million or so votes cast for Democrats in 2000 (7 million in 2004) stay within California. Without the Electoral College, add a few more million to that total, and then completely offset some of the small red states with the fraudulent votes alone.

She needs to retire....look at her!
Then California’s little ballot initiative should rightfully tank. Only the (rotten Democratic) legislature can determine how the electors are chosen.
Well said~~~~

Oh...so she works for the government in some capacity right?
Hey, she is better than Boxer.
Remember the minority crap by the Dems before 2006?
Nuff said..
oh please in CA I have no vote already now they want to abolish the Electoral College. She should not want to change so quickly what if the popular vote is actually a Republican one day.
uh, true. they both need to leave immediately
What are the chances that the small states are going to voluntarilly surrender the small increase in voting weight that our Founding Fathers gave them over the large States so that they would not be irrelevant in Presidential elections?
