Huckabee: a Republican who can lead us back home
Newsday ^ | 8/22/2007 | James Pinkerton

Posted on 08/22/2007 5:47:05 PM PDT by Utah Girl

Let's compare Mike Huckabee to some of the other presidential candidates.

The former governor of Arkansas is not as rich or handsome as fellow Republican Mitt Romney, nor is he as heroic and tortured as John McCain. And he's certainly not as intense and operatic as Rudy Giuliani.

As for the top Democrats, Huckabee is not nearly as careful and calculating as Hillary Rodham Clinton. Nor is he as dashing and Bobby Kennedy-like as Barack Obama. And he's nowhere near as shiny and pretty as John Edwards. And he certainly doesn't talk as much as Joe Biden.

In an interview, Huckabee comes across as a nice guy, even after 15 years in politics, including 10 years as chief executive of the Razorback State. But don't just take my word for it: David Broder, the veteran columnist, calls him "friendly, down-home," and Steve Kornacki, writing in The New York Observer, describes him as "warm and personable."

Huckabee's warmth extends even to Bill and Hillary Clinton: "You know, I've never hated the Clintons," he told National Public Radio. Huckabee went on to say that Bill "made a lot of mistakes - a lot of personal ones," but noted that Clinton had risen up from a "dysfunctional family" to two terms in the White House.

OK, but what do they say about nice guys? That they finish last? Well, actually, in Huckabee's case, they finish second - and a strong second, at that, in the Aug. 11 straw poll in Ames, Iowa. Now the Arkansan has that precious political commodity, buzz: The Boston Globe bannered, "Huckabee sees momentum building," and nothing in the story disputed that headline.

His campaign would catch fire with a snappy song. Maybe something that rhymes with his name.

“but noted that Clinton had risen up from a “dysfunctional family” to two terms in the White House.”

Dysfunctional family is one of the catch-all excuses for bad behavior anymore.

I am reading his book right now. I am starting to really like Mike Huckabee. He is an impressive candidate and with no major negatives. I can only hope he can raise enough money to be competitive.

Huckabee: a Republican who can lead us back home

I'd be happy to see him lead all those ILLEGALS he loves to share American tax dollars with back home.

“I like Mike”? Really though, I think his campaign peaked with the straw poll. It’s all downhill from here.

Huckabee has made some Fair Trade, Pro-Family, and pro-Ecology noises, has a good presentation and manner, and is qualified for the presidency with a couple of terms as Governor, so he could be formidable. But hasn’t he kind of gone squish on some other issues?

My Darling, Clementine comes to mind for some reason.

He does seem like a ‘nice guy.’ Need more than that for candidacy.

He says he wants to ‘seal the border’ but doesn’t talk about what to do about those here illegally already. (He wants to prosecute those already here who ‘commit crimes’ (presumably other than illegal entry, identity theft, labor law violations, tax fraud, etc) but doesn’t mention the rest.

Is in favor of agriculture subsidies (I’m not).

Pro ILLEGAL alien is not a major negative?

Many conservatives would differ with that position.

Haven’t read it, but I like Mike, too. We’ll see if he gets any traction in NH; he’s only got honest talent working for him. I think he is sincere, but, even as this thread shows, he doesn't’t have any big consensus yet.

I think he’s too squishy on the illegal alien issue.

I understand that concern and share it. However, I don’t think any of the more serious GOP candidates are great on the issue of illegal immigration.

Huckabee may be a nice guy but he appears to be on the soft side. A president cannot afford to be soft. There are many lying sociopathic leaders in the world who could take advantage of his trusting nature. Remember when Bush said he looked into Putin’s eyes and trusted him? Remember when Jimmy Carter expressed shock that the Russians would lie to him? We don’t want Pollyanna in the Oval Office.

Huckabee seems to have been influenced by the liberal concept of twisted compassion and white guilt. Huckabee said that the illegal immigrant situation is an opportunity to right the wrongs of the past. Somebody kick me please! We don’t need more door-mat politicians who believe that our children should be punished for all the wrongs ever committed by white people hundreds of years before they were even born.

Really? Then I ask respecfuly that you research/read about the Honorable Duncan Hunter or Tom Tancredo. Both are as opposed to ILLEGAL immigration as they could possibly be and both would make a far better president than Mike Huckabee.

Pinkerton’s generally a bright fellow, with a knack for emerging trends.

Correction: He didn’t rise up from a dysfunctional family. Thanks to his tireless efforts, he merely exchanged his youthfull one for the one he created for his daughter. He didn’t rise above anything...

Ah, he may NOT be all those things, but he IS a schill for "La Raza" and the rest of the "illegal alien amnesty" crowd.
