I seem to remember reading somewhere, the quote: “You are the product of the people you’ve met, and the things that you’ve read.” If that has any truth to it, what does it say about people that don’t read?

I'm at 40-50 per year - (semi-retired).

There are some that I reread every year. Two of them are "On The Bottom" and "Under The Red Sea Sun" by Cmdr Edward Ellsberg. "Bottom" is a hair-raiser about salvaging the S-51 that was rammed and sunk off Block Island in the 20s. "Red Sea" is a marvel of how American ingenuity pulled off the "Massawa Miracle" in 1941 Eritrea. Both make you proud to be an American.

75% read a book...Amazing considering the NEA has tried to unteach reading for 30+ years.

More women than men read every major category of books except for history and biography. Industry experts said that confirms their observation that men tend to prefer nonfiction.

I blow that curve. I prefer nonfiction. At some point I became bored with fiction. History and biography are big favorites.

One in four adults say they read no books at all in the past year, according to an Associated Press-Ipsos poll released Tuesday. Of those who did read, women and seniors were most avid, and religious works and popular fiction were the top choices.

And three in four AP news editors pray this poll is correct.....

Not even Harry Potter?

Harry Potter is so overrated. I have read the first 5 books, and number 6 is sitting on the dresser for 3 weeks now, and I just can't find the time to open it. Between Asheron's Call (a game) and FreeRepublic, I barely can sqeeze out enough time to go work out at the gym or see a movie. Something has to give.

I usually have at least four books going at the same time; one in each bathroom, one by my easy chair, and one on the nightstand...

I have about 3 or 4 books going at the same time as usual.

I usually get them all done, but not always at the same speed.

I suppose that it is some sort of Adult Attention Deficit Disorder symptom.

And yet, our “dumb” President read 134 books last year.

That pretty much explains the 25% bedrock Democratic support.

We’ve worked very hard to dumb down our population and to discourage even simple literacy. Anyway, there is no external, historical truth that isn’t the racist totalitarian creation of DWMs. Our public education efforts are showing fruit.

Here in Cleveland, the very same people who “administer” our public school system are the same people who will disparage “acting white” at every opportunity.

Our work is complete; a stupid, illiterate population with no sense of its own history and absolutely no capacity for rational thought.

We can just keep ‘em stupid with sex, Internet pornography and TV.

I bless my parents (mostly my Mom) who read to us every day when we were growing up. That and the fact that we didn’t have a television until I was in 4th grade got us all in the habit of reading.
When I can’t pick up a book to read, I’ve got audio books playing - cds, cassettes and iPod. I even have audio books going while I FReep. Of course, I often have to pause and rewind. LOL
