BANGKOK, Thailand (AP) - Mr., Mrs. or Ms.? Thailand may soon let people who have had a sex change officially alter their title, too.
A proposal which would allow transgender men or women to choose how they are addressed is being considered by the country's National Legislative Assembly to support an anti-discrimination provision in the draft constitution, Thai newspapers reported.
Wiroon Tangcharoen, an assembly member who is also rector of Srinakharinwirot University, said he supported the move and did not believe it would affect room assignments in university dormitories, where students are segregated by sex, The Nation newspaper said.
Students wishing to live with members of their adopted gender would have to produce medical certificates proving they had undergone sex-change operations, he said.
"The university has nothing against male transsexual students staying in female dormitories on the campus," he was quoted as saying.
Even though Thailand is widely tolerant of gays, transvestites and transsexuals, many face family pressure, social prejudice and domestic violence.
Three years ago, a college in the northern province of Chiang Mai designated a bathroom for the exclusive use of the school's 15 cross-dressing students. The transvestites _ who had to wear male attire at school but were allowed to sport feminine hairdos _ had annoyed female students when using the women's bathrooms, and faced harassment in the men's facilities.
IBT?
Just a bit ago was still thinking of this subject and of a way for this to be dealt with in my church Judicial Council.
Isn’t it true that women have XX chromosomes, and that men have XY chromosomes?
There is no type of hormone therapy that can EVER change that, is there? (Incidentally, Pres. Bush’s new nominee for surgeon general is a member of our Judicial Council.)
In short, there is no such thing as “transgendered.”
How about “freak” as a title?
IBT: is that In Between Technology?
Thailand — The “Walmart” for sex-change.
Yoau’re right; though technically, “gender” refers to speech, dress, act, affect, and presentation, while “sex” means XX or XY and the usual physical characteristics.
In our gender-weakened, depolarized culture, especially the kids, there is so much overlap between the speech etc. of males and females, that there is practically no point in being transgender. You can hardly tell the guys from the gals anyway.
There are people with chromosome abnormalities, like Turner's or Klinefelter's (sp?), who have anything from XO to XXY or XYY. But I don't think these disorders are generally co-present with a gender identity disorder - the people with such chromosomes may have other physical or mental disabilities, but their bodies are clearly male or female and they identify as such.
Probably a more precise definition is that if you have a Y chromosome, you are a male, and if not, you are a female. I think that's how it works in people with X/Y linked chromosome abnormalities. Gender identity disorders should be treated - but the treatment should be to help the person identify with their gender, not to hack body parts off until their body looks the way their illness wants it to. Heroin addicts "feel right" when they get their fix, but that doesn't mean that the treatment for heroin addiction is to supply the addict with unlimited heroin.
... fixed it
