Why would the authorities be checking radiation after a vehicle accident? Maybe a commercial carrier flying radioactive placards? Curious.
That was my question.

Maybe detectors are now placed judiciously around cities, and authorities can draw upon this data?

Geiger counters and other radiation sensors are starting to become commonplace equipment on police and emergency vehicles now - not just the handheld kind, but some that are mounted on the vehicle and active all the time.
A DC beat cop asked our group at our Walter Reed Support Our Troops Freep one night if any of us had gotten radiation treatment of some kind recently... I had - several months earlier - gotten a good dose of I-131 for my thyroid CA. I asked the cop what made him ask. He said “somebody” in our group had set off his radiation detector, which was attached to his belt and not much bigger than a pager or a cell phone.
